Think about how rural India was BEFORE the British entered. There is no war in this book and the setting of this book is after the British came in. Since India is so big, not all areas were impacted immediately but as the British began to move into their areas.

ReplyDelete1)“They have invaded our village with clatter and din, had taken from us the maidan where our children played, and had made the bazaar prices too high for us. I was not sorry to see them go.” (Markandaya 31-32)
ReplyDeleteColonialism impacted everyone in the Indian village negatively. In this quote, the pronoun, “they”, is referred as the British people, who invaded the Indian village around the nineteenth century to the twentieth century. Britain invaded India because of their abundance on resources. When the British people were constructing a new building in the Indian village (Markandaya 31), they took away the Indian’s maidan, an open area near a town, often used as a marketplace or parade ground. This impacted India negatively because ever since Britain invaded them, children will not have any place to play in. In addition, the British increased the price of bazaar, or market. This shows a negative impact in India because when Rukmani said, “… had made the bazaar prices too high for us.”(Markandaya 32), it shows us that market items were not affordable. To sum it all up, colonialism impacted the Indian village negatively due to the fact that the British people took away the Indian’s land space, and they increased the price of market items.
2)“’We had to sell our goat,’ I said. ‘I can no longer afford to buy milk, but while my son is young and needs it I will give it to him.’” (Markandaya 37)
Colonialism impacted the Indian village in a negative way. When Britain invaded India, the effect it had on India is that money became scarce, and so did food. Rukmani, the main character who is an Indian, did not have enough money to buy milk for her son; therefore, she had to sell her goat in order to earn money to buy milk for her son. Before the British invaded India, Rukmani and her husband, Nathan, had plenty of food, because they worked together to harvest crops in the farm Nathan owned (Markandaya 14). Ever since the British invaded the Indian village, the only way Rukmani gathered food was by working for a man named Sivaji, who is a replacement of the old land owner, Zemindar (Markandaya 35). Rukmani transitioned from a woman who had plenty of food, to a woman who is scarce in food. Therefore, colonialism impacted the Indian village negatively because they became insufficient with food and money.
Isn't the second quote more of an example of Rukmani struggling to be a parent?
DeleteRather than her just becoming a mother?
DeleteThe directions for the assignment states "where rukmani has children".
DeleteOh ok I understand. I misunderstood because I thought that we could only use quotes that show her becoming a mother. I was confused, I'm sory. Good ANA btw :)
DeleteIt's okay and thank you :)!
DeleteAnytime :)
DeleteYour second quote was phenomenon. You cleared my confusion when you cited for the quote "...because they worked together to harvest crops in the farm Nathan owned" (14). I understood how Rukmani changed from being a middle class to a lower class. Well done!
DeleteI actually wanted to use the exact same quote, since it was self explanatory. Overall, the second quote was well broken down. Fantastic job, Amy
Thanks Teresa :)!
DeleteThe British never took Nathan's farm. He never had his own farm while the two were married. The British had been in power for quite some time when they married. Whose to say the problem does not lie with Nathan? Why doesn't he get a job in the tannery?
Delete"My father sent for the new doctor who had settled in the village... he was a foreigner" (Markandaya 23)
ReplyDeleteColonialism has a positive impact on the village. When Rukmani's mother becomes sick with a deadly disease, Rukmani returned to her birth village. Rukmani's father called the new doctor in the village to try to heal his wife. The new doctor was a foreigner named "Kennington, whom people called Kenny" (Markandaya 23). This Kenny was a white doctor, likely from Britain. The presence of a white british doctor in a rural indian village is a sign that more British people are coming. The only good reason a british person had for coming to faraway villages in India was to go to India as part of a colonizing force. This was a positive effect of colonialism, because the Indian villages got a doctor with western knowledge of medicines and treatments.
"The overseer listened respectfully and then began telling us to go... in our village he stood, telling us to go, as if he owned us" (Markandaya 30)
Colonialism had a negative impact in the Indian village. One day, a large group of men carrying bricks and other building materials arrived in the village. The men began building in the village. The overseer of the men told the villagers to leave so that his men could do their work. This is ridiculous because the villagers were being told to leave their homes by a man they had never seen before. The overseer was treating the villagers like children, making their decisions for them. The villagers were perfectly capable of making their own decisions about whether to leave their homes or not. This is a negative effect of colonialism, because the villagers were being kicked out of their own homes without any choices.
I absolutely love how you explain how Kenny was white, which means he must be British. This tells me that after Britain colonized India, a british man like Kenny is still able to give treatment to an Indian's mother.
DeleteAlso, I think you're the first person that states Indian villagers have a positive impact after Britain colonized India. Good job, and you have a nice way of breaking down how it was a positive impact. Well done!
i really loved both of your evidence and how you explained them. You did a really great job in context, but there is one thing you had to keep in mind. When, who, where, and why. Also, for the first quote can you explain if this is an opinion or if it is based on the book, "The only good reason a british person had for coming to faraway villages in India was to go to India as part of a colonizing force"
DeleteOleh, just like Teresa and Nawal, I feel the same way about your piece of writing. Just for some little clarification, when you stated "The presence of a white British doctor in a rural Indian village is a sign that more British people are coming",didn't the British have already conquered India while Kenny was there? You are telling me that Kenny was the first British person to come to India to help the people in need, but way before when Rukmani had to leave her rich house with her husband, Nathan, the British have already invaded the Indian village, so therefore, Kenny wasn't a sign that more British people are coming since they are already living there.

ReplyDelete1. "They came back....The red-faced man came back with a foreman, and took charge of everything. He did not live in the village but came and went, while his men took over the huts that had lain empty, the ones who came last settling beside the river, bringing their wives and children with them, or dotting the maidan even more thickly with the huts they built for themselves and their families.” (Markandaya 32-33)
ReplyDeleteThis shows that colonialism impacted the Indian village in a negative way. When Britain invaded India, they took control of them and how they ran their country. The “they” in this quote are referred to the British as Markandaya is making a reference to how the British came to seize control over India. The foreigners taking control of the bazaar, raised the prices on food so, they can earn more profit. By doing so, this impacted the Indian village negatively since with the high prices for food, it makes it hard for the families to support themselves including Rukmani, who works at the bazaar to earn money.
2. “It will not gladden me. Already my children hold their noses when they go by, and all is shouting and disturbance and crowds wherever you go. Even the birds have forgotten to sing, or else their calls are lost to us.” (Markandaya 33)
Colonialism impacted the village here negatively. As Britain took control of India, it impacted how the country functioned like how the Indian village is with the foreigners having control of the bazaar. When Nathan told Rukmani that it is better this way, she became upset with him since they cannot afford food to help feed their children as well as themselves. With the foreigners having control and having food prices to be high, many families, including Rukmani, cannot afford food and support their children causing for the people of the village to be upset and angry at one another.
I liked how u explained what position u had, but for the first quote you should explain the why which is why do u think the British wanted to raise high taxes on Indians? How do you think life was like before the British raised taxes? Also break down words like bazaar and btw i lov how u explained who the "they" were in the quote.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteThe British wanted to raise taxes to show the Indians that they were more dominant and in control. Before this, the Indians barely went through their lives, working and taking care of their families. The bazaar being taken over by the foreigners symbolize a power base since that is where the Indians earn and get food from and is most important.
DeleteHow do you know taxes aren't for schools and hospitals that are so necessary?
Delete1) “...but what could I buy with the money with prices so high everywhere? No sugar or dhal or ghee have we tasted since they came, and should have had none so long as they remained,” (Markandaya 31).
ReplyDeleteThis quote is an example of a negative affect the British Colonization had on India. Here, “they” is referred to the men building the new tannery. Rukmani is telling her husband, Nathan, that she isn't content with them being around, even though she does sell them her pumpkins and plantains for a good amount. Because the men are around, prices for foods have gone up and she can no longer afford the foods she used to normally have such as dhal and ghee. She can't even afford something as simple as sugar. This is an example of colonialism because the British have increased the price of foods, therefore preventing many families (including Rukmani's family) from affording food in order to survive. Rukmani is stating that things have changed and these changes will remain the same as long the British remain. This is how this quote is an example of a negative affect India had from the British Colonization.
2) “'She is maturing fast,' she said. 'Do you not see the way the eyes of the young men lighting on her? If you are not careful you will not find it easy to get her a husband.'...Thereafter, although we did not admit it to each other, we were more careful of Ira. Poor child, she was bewildered by the many injunctions we laid upon her, and the curtailing of her freedom tried her sorely...” (Markandaya 33-34).
This quote demonstrates how Colonialism impacted the village negatively. With the foreigners being in charge ever since the British took control, the rights of the Indians have been limited. For instance, Ira, the daughter of the main character Rukmani, has to remain in the house because the foreigners have been keeping their eyes on her. They have taken away Ira's ability to roam freely in comfort because they keep looking at her in an ill-mannered way, therefore threatening her family’s pride. Her parents keep her at home in order to keep her chastity, thus keeping their family pride. Overall, colonialism is portrayed negatively throughout this quote because it has taken away rights and threatened family pride.

ReplyDelete1. “They had invaded our village with clatter and din, had taken from us the maidan where our children played, and had made the bazaar prices too high for us” (Markandaya 31-32).
ReplyDeleteColonialism impacted the Indian village in a negative way. White men or British men came to the Indian village to build a building. The white men stayed in the village until they finished building the architecture. The prices in the market started to rise because the white men pay much more for the items in the market. This is a negative impact to the Indian village because people are able to afford less for their family.
2. “Are you not glad that our village is no longer a clump of huts but a small town? Soon there will be shops and tea stalls, and even a bioscope, such as I have been to before I was married. You will see” (Markandaya 33).
Colonialism has a positive impact on the Indian village. The village is industrializing and that mean the village is prospering. Resources are much easier to access and jobs will increase. The white men came to the village and build a building, and soon many more came. Buildings are popping up one by one. This is a positive impact to the Indian village because the village is growing bigger and that means wealth for some villagers.
I really love how you connected back to History class for your second quote by using Industrialization. Also, I love how you influenced my mind by making me think that not only Colonialism had a negative impact, but it also had a positive impact on the Indian village and the people in it. :)
DeleteInstead of saying white men, try saying British people so the reader can understand who are the "white people" are. You could also expand on the idea of industrialization, and how it will be in the future for the citizens. One more thing, mention colonialism's definition and relate it back to your topic to make your ANA stronger, but really good work Xiao!
DeleteJoshua, I do not need to define colonialism because I very well know that my audience is Mrs. Karvunis and the honor's students. Replacing "white men" with "British men" is not necessary since I already mention the white men are British men in the beginning, but it is an improvement I will take consider of. If I expand on the idea of Industrialization, it might be inaccurate because India did not Industrilize like the European countries. But I do like the point where you made that I should use the key word, "colonialism", to refer back to by claim.
Delete1) "The overseer listened respectfully and then began telling us to go, not to disturb the men, although for so long he had been glad of many watchers. In our village he stood, telling us to go, as if he owned us" (Markandaya 30)
ReplyDeleteColonialism impacted the Indian village in a negative way. The overseer is one of the strange men who entered the Indian village; they all came in the village to build a building for their own kind. The overseer is the person who was directing his people. The overseer liked the attention he got from the Indian people at first, but then he decided that he wants everyone to do what he says and leave. Colonialism has a negative impact on the Indian village; because more strangers will enter the village and become friendly with the Indian people at the beginning, and then decide to kick them out because they will want complete control. This will eventually grow and the Indian village will no longer be the Indian village.
2) “what could I buy with the money with prices so high everywhere? No sugar or dhal or ghee have we tasted since they came.” (Markandaya 31).
Colonialism impacted the Indian village in a negative way. Rukmani and her husband were talking about the good and bad that came out of the strangers; Nathan, Rukmani’s husband, thinks that they are good for business. Rukmani does not like them, even though they buy her harvest for a good price, but their prices on her family’s needs are very high even the money she receives is not enough. Colonialism has a negative impact on the Indian village, because the strangers have some of the Indian’s needs which they take advantage of and put them on high prices.
1)“With six children to feed we could no longer afford to eat all the vegetables we grew” (Markandaya 26).
ReplyDeleteThis colonialism impacted negatively towards India, because Britain colonized India. India was taken over because of how separated it was. India was very diverse in culture, so they weren’t able to go against Britain. Since India was in fragments, Britain easily conquered it. This resulted India’s resources to decrease and poverty starts to strike. Rukmani, the main character suffered in poverty by the lack of money she had to support her family. She had to sell her vegetables to be able to receive adequate amount money to support her family. After what Britain had done, India started to lose everything they got. Rukmani already lives in a small hut (10). Now she has to give up whatever she has to raise her children. Poverty has a major negative impact towards Indians.
2)“Dung is too useful in our homes to be given to the land, for it is fuel to use and protection against damp and heat and even ants and mice” (36).
After Britain colonized India, once again resources are low, and Indians have to support themselves with whatever they have. India had a negative impact due to Britain colonizing their country. Rukmani’s dwelling is just a hut. Her hut is vulnerable since there isn’t anything that barricades it. Unfortunately, Rukmani’s resources are low and have to use dungs to protect her home. Dungs are what animals excrete; they are basically waste and manure. Rukmani uses dung to barricade her home to prevent insects and intruders. This is a negative impact towards Indians because they literally have no materials or anything luxurious to decorate around the hut. They have to use waste, which is the last thing anyone would want to use. Britain conquered India caused Indians to use whatever they have left to support themselves and their homes. Therefore, India was negatively impacted after it was colonized.
I really love your context with analysis, but for the second quote, may you please clarify to me by what you were trying to say in this sentence "India had a negative impact due to Britain colonizing their country." Does this mean that it was India that had a negative impact towards their own country or was it Britain who had a negative impact on India?
DeleteWhen I said, "India had a negative impact due to Britain colonizing their country", means that India was colonized, (conquered) by Britian. India had a negative impact because it was taken over by Britain. I hope that clarified your thinking.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteI see what you are trying to tell me, but then shouldn't it be otherwise like Britain/Colonialism had a negative impact on India? But thank you for clarifying that to me. :)
DeleteVeronica-
DeleteNIce question! I felt that the sentence in quote two was unclear as well.

ReplyDeleteI really love how you explained your first quote but doesn't that show Rukmani as a struggling parent since it was tough for her to support her big family? This quote would be perfect for your next post though. :)
DeleteI disagree with you Veronica. I don't think the first quote shows her as a struggling parent because Rukmani would have had the same concerns about food with or without her children. This quote isn't trying to show Rukmani as a struggling parent, but as a concerned human being worrying about whether or not she will be able to eat the foods she would have normally eaten before the men building the tannery came along.
DeleteSophie, just to improve on your first quote's analysis, you should state a clear topic sentence showing how India villagers were impacted. Was it impacted positively, or negatively. Yes, you stated that in the middle of your paragraph, but readers would definitely be confused if you don't state it somewhere in the beginning.
DeleteAsma, I see what you are trying to say but I still feel that it shows more of them struggling with economy due to a huge family that they have, according to her reasoning. In her explanation, she said "She grew plenty of food for the two of them until food became harder to afford when she had "six children to feed"(Markandaya 22). This threw me off since that one phrase made me think that it's because of her "six children" which caused her to struggle with food.
DeleteVeronica, I didn't say that her analysis was on topic, I just stated that the quote itself didnt show Rukmani struggling with her family. The way Sophie explained it is different from what I was trying to prove to you.
DeleteWell, everyone views quotes differently and have different meanings to them. I'm not saying that you're wrong, I'm just stating my perspective on it all due to her analysis. Her analyses influenced my mind that it's all about struggling and economy.
Delete1) " As for the overseer, he made much play of his authority, directing them with loud voice and many gestures but doing not a stroke of work himself" (Markanday 30).
ReplyDeleteColonialism has a negative effect in the villagers as the British just comes in and takes over. Since India is colonized, the British are just building whatever they want to build in the villages. The way of life is going to change as the Indians are going to get used to the British living with them. Since the British are living in India, there are going to be changes like prices being raised. Life is going to be tough for people like Rukumani because she has 6 children an she has to feed all of them. Then, there is the overseer. He has so much power for just doing nothing as he directs his people to build houses. That's how colonialism works. Lifestyles are going to change as the British will be staying in the Indian villages. That's how colonialism has a negative impact in India.
2)" No sugar or dhal or ghee have we tasted since they came, and should have had none so long as they remained" (Markanday 32)
Colonialism has a negative effect to the villagers in India as Rukumani can't be able to buy food for her family. Prices are too expensive and since there are a lot of British people living in the villages, they will be buying all the resources. Rukumani has 6 children and she won't be able to support her children. That's what colonialism will bring. When the British come, they'll take all the resources and raise them at a high price. The British come in and start building in the village and they live there. Life has totaly changed from bad to worse as the people in the village can't get the resources to survive due to high pricing and colonialism. That's how colonialism impacted India negatively.
HEY! me again 8-)
ReplyDelete"The men worked well and quickly, with many a sidelong glance at us;they seem to enjoy having created such a stir and lured such a big audience" (Markandaya 26)
"The men" are workers creating a tannery, or a place to turn animal skins into leather. Creating tanneries are and example of colonialism because leather is a valuable thing, especially in wealthy nations, such as Great Britain. Going back to the men, they are townspeople and they've traveled hundreds of miles just to work in the village Ruthmani and her family live in. Although these workers may be used to busy streets and construction, the villagers are not. Because the villagers are not used to construction, the turn into a crowd making these workers pleased because they know they can easily, persuade them into anything that could benefit themselves. The townspeople know that the villagers could easily listen because they have no reason to argue with townspeople who know so much, in comparison to themselves. This is a negative effect of colonialism, because the modern workers can easily take advantage of the villagers, who are less modern, making the villagers lose their own freedom.
"For Kenny, I spread a mat and he sat down while we grouped ourselves about him, but I could see he was not accustom to sitting cross-legged on the floor, for his knees instead of resting on the mat sprang up aslant like the horns of a bull, an I was uncomfortable for him, and distressed that I had nothing else to offer." (32)
Colonialism brought Kenny, a white man, to India. He is a doctor, and works in the village Ruthmani and her family live in. When Kenny came into Ruthmani's home, her children were interested in seeing a white man, which is why they "grouped [them]selves about him," while Ruthmani gave him something to sit on the floor with, but it was obvious that he was not accustom to it. Kenny is affected by colonialism in a negative way while Ruthmani's family is affected in a positive way. Kenny has to now work in an uncomfortable atmosphere where he has to grow accustom to, which is not easy for a grown man. As for Ruthmani and her children, they are affected in a positive way from colonialism. Ruthmani, now has accesses to a a very capable and educated doctor. Her children, now get to meet new people, other then just Indians, which in the future could make them more open minded around people of different races, making colonialism positive for Ruthmani and her family and negative for Kenny, the white doctor.
Your analysis is great, but you shouldn't go back and forth saying that colonialism impacted Kenny negatively, while it impacted Rukmani positively in the second quote. It's best off if you stick to Kenny for the main focus of this ANA,since the quote is mainly based off Kenny. It would be confusing for the reader to understand your position whether colonialism impacted the villagers positively or negatively, since you're going back and forth with Kenny and Rukmani.

DeleteRowida, Amy is trying to help you by improving your work. You shouldn't disrespect the people who are trying to tell you your mistakes in order for you to learn from them and not repeat them again. (Sorry but I'm not trying to be rude). As for me, you should state your position in the beginning to let the reader know if Colonialism had a positive or negative impact.

ReplyDeleteI love how you included context in yout ANA to show the shift between the Indian village before and after the British invasion. Overall, your analysis is great, but there are a few minor mistakes, such as your past and present tense, and the wording is a bit awkward. You should also specify who the "red face man" is in the second analysis.

ReplyDelete1) “In our sort of family it is well to be the first-born: what resources there are, have late to be shared out in smaller and smaller portions” (Markandaya 26).
ReplyDeleteColonialism impacted the village and their people negatively. The customs which the people in the village have is to have many newborns, but with all that the economy is going through the people can’t afford to feed so many mouths. The main character, Rukmani, is barring many newborns but the amount of food only increases, causing many more problems becoming a mother. Colonialism impacted the village and Rukmani negatively because of the shortage of amounts of food there is, the ones born later wouldn’t receive as much nutrition while growing up. Without the proper nutrition the people could lack many aspects of a healthy lifestyle. This shows colonialism because of the lack of resources after the British colonialized. When the British colonialized, prices increased and work became harder to manage, with the lack of healthy people British continue to reign over a weak civilization with full control over the economic lifestyle, political aspects, and the social inequality that causes the people to suffer. This quote clearly shows the inequality and economic lifestyle of how colonialism
2) “As it was, we were going short of many thing, We no longer had milk in the house, except for the youngest child; curds and butter were beyond our means except on rare occasions” (Markandaya 28).
Colonialism impacted the people and the village in a positive way. Rukmani is struggling to feed her family but finds a different way to feed her children. This shows how colonialism has positively treated the civilian’s lifestyle of how they have become more reliant on themselves. The shortage of a few necessities are counter balanced by having many other resources such as their own plantains, coconuts, fish, and etc.; which basically shows how the people can find alternate paths in life instead of relying on others.(Markandaya 28). Colonialism is positively helping villagers to expand their horizon instead of buying they are now the ones producing. The result being that the prices are higher than before, this also changed the economic growth and business in India, and around the village and their people. Colonialism has caused many prices to rise resulting in villages but resulted in villagers finding alternate resources which help people be more self-efficient and self-reliant.
I love your analysis! It's very clear, except for one part in the first analysis. The sentence, "Rukmani, is barring many newborns but the amount of food only increases, causing many more problems becoming a mother. ", is confusing. I feel like it's contradicting itself in a way. If you're trying to say they're short on food, you should change the wording of the sentence to ".. the amount of food needed increases" or, you could say ".. the price of food is increasing, which makes it difficult for her to buy food to support her children".
DeleteThanks Amy for finding the mistake! I accidentally forgot to type in an important word to connect everything together. The correct version should be, "The main character, Rukmani, is barring many newborns but the amount of food needed only increases, causing many more problems becoming a mother."
Delete"They had invaded our village with clatter and din, had taken from us the maidan where our children played and had made bazaar prices too high for us. I was not sorry to see them go." (Markandaya 27)
ReplyDeleteThis quote shows that colonialism had a negative impact on India. Before the townspeople came, the village that Rukmani lived in was peaceful. There was enough money and food for everyone. After the British started building the tannery (a place where animal skin is turned to leather), everything changed. The men brought their wives and children with them, causing more noise to the already annoying clatter of the men building the tannery. This disturbed the quiet village. On top of that, the British raised bazaar prices. A bazaar is a market, so raising the prices made it harder for the villagers to buy their necessities. The men building the tannery were getting paid about two rupees a day, which was more than what the villagers make on a good day, and they are spending their money without a care in the world, meanwhile the villagers are saving every grain of rice they could in order to not starve. Most importantly, the British just popped up one day out of no where, without the Indians authorization, and decided to start building in their village. Overall, the British had a negative impact on India because they are making everyday life hard for the Indians and disturbing their village.
"Thereafter, although we did not admit it to each other, we were more careful of Ira." (Markandaya 30)
This quote shows that colonialism had a negative impact on India, escpecially on Rukmani's family. Before the British entered India, everything was calm. All the women knew each other, the children would run around and play without a care in the world. Her daughter Ira used to go out into the village with her brothers and they were safe. Now, Ira is thirteen and is starting to catch the attention of men, especially the British men who have arrived. This causes Rukmani and Nathan to keep Ira in the house. So, because the British have come into India, they are making the Indians uncomfortable and causes people to stay indoors, like Rukmani has done to Ira. The British have basically disturbing the freedom of the people of this village. Therefore, colonialism had a negative impact on India because they are slowly taking away the people's freedom.
"But what could I buy with the money with prices so high everywhere? No sugar or dhal or ghee have we tasted since they came, and should have had none so long as they remained" (Markandaya 32).
ReplyDeleteColonialism had a bad impact on everyone. Since "they",the men building the new building tannery, prices have gone up. With prices so high, people can not buy these things. Rukmani's family is impacted negatively since they don't have enough money to afford the foods as simple as sugar. Ever since the British invaded India, the prices have gone up. Not many people will be able to buy these types of foods for their family. Rukmani is stating that everything has changed since the men have arrived. Therefore, this has had a negative impact.
"We had to sell our goat" I said. " I can no longer afford to buy milk, but while my son is young and needs it I will give it to him" (Markandaya 37).
Colonialism had a negative impact on Rukmani's family. They are having a hard time on getting food and money. Since the British invaded India, money has been scarce and so has food. Rukmani has to breast feed her youngest son since they don't have enough money for milk. Rukmani collects food by working with Sivaji, the replacement of the old land owner. This is one way that she receives food for her family. Therefore, it has impacted them in a negative way.
You used two strong evidence, but for your analysis for the first quote, I'm confused about the second sentence. In your second sentence, you should specify the prices of what item or food is increasing. You should also include context in both analysis, so it would be easier for the reader to understand the transition in the village between the time before and after Britain invaded India.
Delete“My fears came crowding upon me again. I had never been to this kind of doctor; he suddenly became terrifying.” (Markandaya 24)
ReplyDeleteLike many Indian families, Rukmani and Nathan eagerly anticipated the birth of their first son. The introduction of the white foreigner doctor, Kenny, sets up one of the central impact in the colonialism. Rukmani’s initial wariness of Kenny comes from her lack of exposure to people from outside her culture. Additionally the fear that Rukmani felt was from the ignorance that Kenny described. The colonialism impacted India in a negative way. After the British invade India, foreigners came constantly in India. The India citizen became unease for their lack of exposer toward different social class of people as illustrated in Rukmani’s encounter with Kenny. India as before the colonialism was more simple country where only the same social classes and culture exist. However as colonialism impacted India, foreigner started to show up and therefore causing uneasiness to citizens of India who lack the exposure to people of different class and culture.
“Hundreds of men,” Arjun gasped “They are pulling down houses around of the maidan and there is a long line of bullocks carts carrying bricks.” (Markandaya 29)
As Arjun pointed for a small rural village, the arrival of the tannery meant big changes. The arrival of strange workers brought higher prices and drove out some local businessmen. Because many of the workers were young, single men, the social fabric of the village is disrupted. This illustrates the negative impact that colonialism has in the India’s rural life. After British invade India, India changes as buildings and cities are created where villages were seen. This shows the impact of the colonialism as citizen of rural life became discomfort in the changes around them. For instance, Rukmani recalls the loud noises and smells of alcohol from the workers’ camp, all disruptions to her previously innocent and safe life. Alongside these changes she understands there is no going back and she must learn to live with the changes. This discomfort illustrates the negative impact of colonialism.
I like the analysis for the first quote. It looks like you put a lot of thought into it.
DeleteSecond analysis (cant start a sentence with because).
Abdullah, you have good analysis, but I think you should include the topic sentence in the beginning, or it'll confuse the reader on what your position is.
DeleteI disagree with you Jimmy. In fact it is better to not put the "topic sentence" in the first sentence because it will bore the reader. They would want to know the background information about the evidence before you go into the main explanation of how britain colonized India. You should give context to lead the author to that topic so they can understand what is going on rather than "confusing" them.
DeleteBut, that is, only when you state your position clearly and understandably so that the reader can undertsand what your point is.
DeleteNawal, Jimmy wasn't necessarily stating to put the topic sentence as the first sentence. But to include it somewhere in the beginning, this very true because many will be confused on the author's position. If you rearrange the order of sequence it will confuse the audience, such as putting context before your t.s. and so on. Overall, Abdullah did a great job on his analysis.
DeleteI totally agree with Nawal, for that it was nice to leave out the T.S. for later. I believe that the way to start after having quotes is by providing background information.
Delete1)"In our sort of family it is well to be the first-born: what resources there are, have later to be shared out in smaller and smaller portions"(Markandaya 26).
ReplyDeleteColonialism affected Rukmanis family in a negative way. Rukmani is the main character in the book and she has so many children that she has problems feeding them. When the British colonized the village where Rukmani lived everything chaged. When Rukmani says it is well to be the first-born, she means that the person who is born first in the family enjoys the resources more than the child born last. Being an only child makes it easier for the parents to feed you, but when there are six children the food has to be shared in small portions enough to feed everyone therefore making it hard for the parents to feed the children. In this case the problem that Rukmani is facing. This shows how colonialism impacted Rukmanis family in a negative way.
2)" With six children to feed we could no longer afford to eat all the vegetables we grew. Once a week I would cut and pack our garden produce, selecting the best and leaving the spoilt or bruised vegetables for ourselves, cover the basket with leaves and set off for the village"(Markandaya 26-27).
Colonialism impacted India in a negative way. When the British colonized India, India began to decrease in resources. Rukmani had difficulties getting money to buy food for her family because she could only sell the resources that were in good conditions. Leaving her family to eat the spoilt and bruised resources showed how poor Rukmani started to get. With not enough food to feed her family she would need to sell most of her resources. This shows how colonialism impacted India in a negative way and led to poverty.
Abdullah, for your first quote I disagree with you. I believe that colonization was positive. Foreigners like Kenny , actually helped Rukmani have the sons she dreamed of.Next time , I suggest you put your topic sentence in the beginning. You have them in the middle an it makes it unclear which position you are in if you only state it once.
ReplyDelete1)"'My Lord,my benefactor,'I cried. 'Many a time I have longed to see you. Now at last you come,'and I bent down to kiss his feet, shod as they were in leather shoes" (Markandaya 31).
ReplyDeleteColonialism had impacted India in a positive way. The "benefactor", Rukmani is referring to is the British doctor;Kenny. The quote is referring to Britains, because the villagers can't afford leather shoes, therefore it has to be Britains. Kenny not only helped cure the workers at the tannery, but also helped Rukmani mother. Rukmani refers to Kenny as a benefactor, because Kenny gave Rukmani a chance to have sons in her family. Kenny felt that he needed to help the unfortunate ones ,so he helped Rukmani. Therefore a British man like Kenny had an positive impact towards the villagers.
2)"'We had to sell our goat,'I said.'I can no longer afford to buy milk, but while my son is young and needs it I will give it to him'" (Markandaya 32).
This quote shows that when India was colonized it had an negative impact to Rukmani and her family. When the Britains colonize India it led to the decline of wealth and increase of poverty. The "him", Rukmani is referring is his son; Selvam and she'll have to breast-feed his son in order to make him satisfied since they can't afford milk. Rukmani also had to sell her goat to have money for her family. Selvam is too old for breast-feeding, but since they were so poor, they had to do it anyways. Colonization had led Rukmani's family to live a life in poverty.
I liked how u explained your position Jimmy and included great context, but you should also include how the lives of other Indians were effected as well instead of only saying Rukmani. and why did Britain colonize India? you should have explained that in the second quote and relate it to the evidence.

Delete"They are pulling down houses around the maiden and there is a long line of bullock carts carrying bricks" (Markandaya 25).
ReplyDeleteRumors about foreigners coming were spread around the town for a week or so but no one knew if it was true or not. However Arjun Rukmani's first son, second born, came running with the news about "hundreds of men" (Markandaya 32) coming and pulling down houses caused horror through his family's faces. This is a neutral impact of Colonialism. It can be a negative impact because it is causing terror within the villagers and taking over the land where their sons play by "their" I mean Rukmani's sons and her neighbors' sons. It causes them terror because they don't know what the men are going to do or what they are building on the maidan where their children play. However it can also be a positive impact because all the white men also known as the british brought traders and Rukmani was able to sell her organic products at a higher price than before and it allowed the villagers to trade goods for better ones. Therefore this illustrate a neutral impact of Colonialism because it created good and bad impact on the villagers.
"Thereafter he brought me a little cow's milk when he could, or sent it with one of the children from the village, who were always glad to help him,..." (Markandaya 33).
In this quote the pronoun "he" is for Kenny whom helped Rukmani's mom's death to be less painful, since then she had an appreciation for him. Also she has known him as a "benefactor" (Markandaya 32) because Kenny helped her to have more sons which back before her mother's death couldn't be able to. Now that Kenny is back in town he has come to visit Rukmani and her family, no one knows where or why he leaves the town but he just does and no one knows. When Kenny went inside her house, he met everyone and afterwards he would come and visit her again and bring anything for her children since he has an easy was for them. One day he saw that Rukmani's breasts were sore he asked her why then she said because she needed to feed her 3 year-old son since they sold the little goat they had. This illustrates a positive impact of Colonialism because Kenny is described as a white pale man in chapter 3 which is also known as a British man, he has cured many other villagers because he has knowledge in medicine. It is positive because it shows that not all the british men are mean and are coming to pull down houses instead they would come and help cure others like Kenny did. This is a positive impact into the villagers lives because they had someone that can cure them and in Rukmani's case helped her and feed her children.
1." They had invaded our village with clatter and din, had taken from us the maiden where our children played, and had made the bazaar prices too high for us."(Markandaya 31)
ReplyDeleteColonialism has impact India in a negative way because the British people are building a building on children' favorite area. It is tell us that the word they means the British men because they are taking over India. This effect Rukmani's children because that is where they play. They can just go there and built something because they are taking over India and they don't care about the people.
2. "With six children to feed we could no longer afford to eat all the vegetables we grew."(Markandaya 26)
Colonialism has impact India in a negative way because people can afford food for her children. Rukmani, the main character, works hard on growing food for her family, but since the British people are taking over India rather cannot grow that much food. Rukmani and her kids cannot eat that much because the British people are taking over there land. Rukmani cannot grow that much food when there are not enough space to grow vegetables. If Rukmani eat all their food how is she going to feed her children. Since she have to feed six children.
I liked how you connected to colonialism and stated your position clearly, but you should add more context. For example, in the first quote explain what building they are building and how that building affected the Indian families negatively. Explain why the British are taking over India and where the children play. Break down words from the evidence. Explain how the people react to this behavior.
DeleteAmanda I loved the way that you hinted at what the word colonialsim meant, (or maybe that's just my point of view). It is as if you are trying to use one of our ANA guides, and one of them would be defining unkown vocabulary words, for that you don't know who your audience is!
DeleteElizabeth G. Colon
ReplyDelete1) “They had invaded our village with clatter and din, had taken from us the maidan where our children played, and had made the bazaar prices too high for us.” (Markandaya 31)
In the book Nectar in a Sieve, the British started to construct a building in the maidan of Rukmani’s village. The maidan was used as an open space where games were played by the children of the village. The British colonizing India impacted Rukmani’s village in a negative since they have changed Rukmani village for the worse. Rukmani argues with her husband (Nathan) that the Britain’s have affected their village in a negative way and she wishes they were gone. She argues that the Britain’s have taken away their maidan by constructing the building. Additionally, she argues that because of the Britain’s the price to buy bazaar is too high. These are two changes that have affected Rukmani’s village for the worse.
2) “Are you not glad that our village is no longer a clump of huts but a small town? Soon there will be shops and tea stalls, and even a bioscope, such as I have been to before I was married.”(Markandaya 33)
Even though Rukmani disagrees with the construction of the Britain’s building in the village maidan her neighbor, Kunthi, believes that the British colonizing there village is impacting the village in a positive way. As Rukmani was talking to Kunthi about how the Britain’s were changing their village Kunthi believed that the Britain’s are impacting the village in a positive way by expanding the village’s territory. The Britain’s are doing this by turning their village into a small town. Additionally, Kunthi believes that by the Britain’s colonizing the village it is making the village advance. By the Britain’s building more shops, bioscopes, and tea stalls it is making the village more luxurious and urban. Britain’s colonizing India is helping India become more advance and urban which could be positive for those who want India to be more urbanized.
I truly loved how you had good context and broke down some words. But for the first quote, you said that it was used as an open space where games were played by the children in the village but then u cut the sentence and went on saying that British impacted Indias village for the worse. And then you said that Rukmani argues that the British have taken away their maidan by constructing the building which made the reader completly forget about what you said in the first place. I just think you have to explain why the British impacted the village in a negative way in more detail. How is taking away the maidan a negative effect? For the second quote, I absolutely loved it. You explained how it was a positive effect and gave a strong explanation. Good job on that !! :D
Deleteand Pleaseee dont think im trying to be mean
1. “I turned away and, despite myself, the tears came, tears of weakness and disappointment; for what woman wants a girl for her first born?” (Markandaya 15)
ReplyDeleteRukmani had married to Nathan, a farmer. Soon after the marriage, Rukmani became pregnant with a child. She gave birth to a girl and named her Ira. However, she was not happy with this, as said in the quote. This seems to have a negative impact on India and the village. Instead of being happy like a woman would when she finds out she gave birth to a healthy child, regardless of the gender, Rukmani is instead filled with disappointment and sadness when she finds out it was a girl she gave birth to.
2. “We did not talk about it, it was always with us: a chill fear that Ira was to be our only child.” (Markandaya 18)
After Rukmani bore her first child, her disappointment turned to happiness and content because Ira grew up to become beautiful and very active. However, Rukmani began to fear that Ira was the only child she would have. This shows a negative impact on Rukmani and the village. As said earlier in the novel Rukmani was disappointed with her first born being a girl. This disappointment returned to her in this part of the novel and she still fears she will not have a boy, showing the negative affect on Rukmani.
First, I loved the context and how you made it brief and fun for the audience to read. But then you didnt include key words like colonize,or Britain, or India. You had to show who had anegative impact on the village. But other than that, you are very good at explaining briefly which many people cant do, just a little more details will do :)
DeleteI think it's overall good but as you know it needs improvement. I think you should include topic sentence to set the reader in firm hold of your claim or otherwise it lead reader to intercept of what your claim is.
DeleteRaphaela-
DeleteThe quotes do not have anything to do with British involvement in India. They are simply about the Indian traditions in general.
“Thereafter he brought me a little cow's milk when he could, or sent it with one of the children from the village who were always glad to help him, for he had a way of attracting children; there was ever a troop following him about.” (Markandaya 37-38)
ReplyDeleteColonialism affected the Indian village in a positive way. After the British invaded the village, Kenny had came to settle at the Indian village. Rukmani first met Kenny when he was aiding her dying mother (Markandaya 23). She knew he would bring hope to many Indians, including herself. Kenny is a British doctor who saw Rukmani’s breast was very sore from breast-feeding her child, Selvam (Markandaya 37). Rukmani told Kenny that she does not have enough money to afford milk. Therefore, he decided to help her by giving her some cow milk hereafter on. Sometimes Kenny would ask other children from the village to carry out this task and they would gladly help him out. British colonialism had a positive impact because it brought many nice people to settle in India. Just like Kenny, he is willing to support the Indians when they face difficulties and hardships that intervene with their needs.
“ They had invaded our village with chatter and din, had taken from us the maiden where our children played, and had made the bazaar prices too high for us. I was not sorry to see them go.” (Markandaya 31-32)
Colonialism affected everyone in the Indian village negatively. After the British colonized the Indian village, people were unsatisfied of their actions. They took away the maiden where children used to have fun so they can build huts for themselves (Markandaya 31). Also, the British raised the bazaar prices that Rukmani’s family and other Indians who live in the village could not afford anything. Rukmani had to sell her goat so she can buy milk for her son, Selvam (Markandaya 37). This is a negative impact on the Indian village because children lost the place where they usually have fun and many families were poor and could not afford anything since the prices at the bazaar had skyrocket very high.
Tony, your quotes are strong and your analysis with context is satisfactory. I like how you referred back to your quotes and talked about how Colonialism had both positively and negatively affected the Indians and their village.
Delete(1) "Are you not glad that our village is no longer a clump of huts but a small town? Soon there will be shops and tea stalls, and even a bioscope, such as i have been to before I was married." (29)
ReplyDeleteBritish colonization of India had a positive impact because it brought advancements to society that were not common in Indian villages before. As Kunithi said, the village is no longer "a clump of huts". British workers built a tannery that took the space of several Indian houses. However, the newly built tannery modernized India and exposed the villagers to new things. Because of the British workers and the overseer, India will become urbanized and give the citizens new places to shop, restaurants to eat in, and an expansion of land. Overall, the British influence gave India a more contemporary feel that came with more people the Indian citizens can trade with.
(2) '"We had to sell our goat", I said. "I can no longer afford to buy milk, but while my son is young and needs it i will give it to him."' (33)
Colonialism left a negative impression on the Indian economy. Rukmani meets again with Kenny- the man who helped her conceive her sons. She takes him to her hut and introduces him to her husband and children. Kenny makes several more visits to the hut and one day sees Rukmani breastfeeding her three year old son, Selvam. Rukmani explains that they can "no longer afford to buy milk" and that her son is still young and needs milk to grow. This is a representation of how Britain did not help India. Rukmani and her family are poor and can not even buy a common household item such as milk. Selvam is too old to be nursed by his mother. Rukmani previously mentioned that "Ira had been fed well on milk and butter and rice; Arjun too, for he was the first boy" (22). Rukmani's first and second child had a stable amount of milk and food for them, but sadly her youngest does not have the same fate. This shows that the longer the British stayed in India the worse the economy was. India used to be a prosperous place when Rukmani's father was headman, but as time passed and Britain's influence on India grew stronger, the country's economy went in a downward spiral direction.
1) "As for living in a town-if town this is-why, there is nothing I would fly from sooner if I could go back to the sweet quiet of village life. Now it is all noise and crowds everywhere, and rude young hooligans idling in the street and dirty bazaars and uncouth behaviour, and no man thinks of another but schemes only for his money"(Markandaya 50).
ReplyDeleteColonialism has had a negative impact on the Indian village and its people. The tannery has changed the way the village functions. It has shifted the village from a quiet farm place to a town like mode. The British brought the tannery into the village. They created business in the village. Some people were happy because it created jobs but some people were not satisfied like Rukmani. Rukmani didn't like how the tannery negatively impacted the village. It has made the people selfish and greedy for money. Instead of people helping each other, they were in competition for business. This shows how the tannery has changed the people of the village in negative way.
2) "Yet they were good sons, considerate of us, patient with others, always giving us a fair share of their earnings. With their money we began once again to live well"(Markandaya).
Rukmani's sons Arjun and Thambi worked in the tannery which was a business that the British brought into the village. Arjun and Thambi took these jobs to help their family. They made enough money to help and support their family. This was a positive effect because the tannery provided jobs to help people survive like Rukmani and her family. People were able to support themselves because of the tannery. The British influenced this to happen. Therefore this was a positive effect on the village and the people.
“There are others,” she replied. “neighbours, women…and I a failure, a women who cannot even bear a child.” (Markanadaya 54)
ReplyDeleteColonialism had a negative impact on Rukmani and her family. Ira, Rukmani`s daughter was returned to her home by her husband after five years. This shows colonialism had a negative impact because Ira`s husband abandoned her because he wanted his first born to be a boy but unfortunately Ira couldn’t have children at all. With this idea of having the first born be a boy has made Rukmani suffer and had to see her daughter abandoned by her husband. Even Rukmani was thinking, “All this I had gone through-the torment, the anxiety.” (Markanadaya 54) Rukmani is showing that she is suffering because of colonialism.
“You do everything you can,” he said. “It is not enough. I am tired of hunger and I am tired of seeing my brothers hungry. There is never enough, especially since Ira came to live with us.” (Markanadaya 55)
Colonialism had a negative impact on Rukmani and her family. Rukmani`s son, Arjun, has told his mother that is going to work in the tannery. Rukmani said he was too young to work (Markanadaya 55) but he insisted that he was going to work. This shows that there wasn’t a law that forbids young kids to work. In Britain child labor was allowed which also meant it was allowed in India as a part of colonialism. Colonialism has impacted on Rukmani negatively because since the prices of food has risen; she couldn’t afford to buy food for her family causing her eldest son to work so he would not see his siblings suffering from hunger. This made Rukmani feel she has failed as a mother by not providing her children with what they needed.
1) "With six children to feed we could no longer afford to eat all the vegetables we grew"(Makandaya 26).
ReplyDeleteNow that Rukmani has six children, life begins to change around her house. She begins to sell the best vegetables she grows to a money lender named Biswas, keeping only the spoilt and bruised ones to feed her family. For this reason, colonialism has impacted India negatively since the British invaded India and gained power and wealth around the 20th century. India must have had internal conflicts since it's a large country and Britain found the opportunity to invade it for its resources and especially since India is the center of trade. Since Britain wanted India's resources, this means India was a wealthy nation until Britain colonizd it and put it under their hand. Hence, they used their power and wealth to invade India's economy and make Indians live in poverty and hunger under their rule. The rates of agricultural produce were low in India and, therefore Rukmani and her husband Nathan did not have the resources to support their family with the necessities of life. This is how the colonialism of Britain had a negative impact on India.
2)"They have invaded our village with clatter and din, had taken from us the maidan where our children played, and had made the bazaar prices too high for us. I was not sorry to see them go"(Makandaya 31-32).
Everything begins to fall apart for Rukmani. She can never accept the British men and is frustrated by them when they have constructed a tannery(workplace that turns animal skin to leather)that made so much "clatter" or noise that the village is no longer tranquil as it was before. Soon, bazaar(marketplace) prices increased because Britain wanted to gain more wealth. The items that villagers normally buy are now higher.Even though Rukmani benefitted from selling her pumpkins and plantains for better prices, she still couldn't buy with the money with prices so high. It had been a negative effect of British colonialism around the 20th century for those in Rukmani's position. As for the British men, they were paid very well and were able to afford the products they desired. Many Indian families were oppressed by poverty and so they had to suffer. This resulted in hardship for the families who cant afford to buy produce. Therefore, it is a negative effect of colonialism. Additionally, the maidan(open space or area near a town) was taken away from the children. This was a negative effect for children who need a playful childhood, but, instead the British are depriving them from their childhood. This is how colonialism was negative towards the people of India.
Nawal, this was phenomenon. I really loved how you talked about the history of India and how it was known for as a center trade. I have understood everything in your beautiful analysis and have no concerns at all. Keep up the good work. :)
Delete1) "They are pulling down houses around the maidan and there is a long line of bullock carts carrying bricks"(Markandaya 25)
ReplyDeleteColonialism has had a negative impact on the Indian society. The British came and began to over the land. They knocked down any houses that were in the way, and made room for their own building. They had planned to make a business building for their own people and they were not going to change that plan. They acted as if they controlled the Indian society, and decided to do what they wanted with the land.
2)"They had invaded our village with clatter and din, had taken from us the maidan where our children played, and had made the bazaar prices too high for us"(Markandaya 27)
Colonialism has had a negative impact on the Indian society. The British came to their land and made it their own. They effected both adults and children negatively. The workers destroyed the maidan, a place where children played. They also increased the prices of things family needed. The price of food and necessary daily items were now at a price that Indians could not afford. Indian families now had to struggle to get what they needed. The village was no longer a place to get what they needed. It was soon becoming a British business place.
1)“They had invaded our village with clatter and din, had taken from us the maidan where our children played, and had made the bazaar prices too high for us” (Markandaya 31-32)
ReplyDeleteThis quote shows how British Colonialism has impacted Rukmani's family and the Indian village in a negative way. Due to British invading India for space to create a new building, they took away an area known as the maidan which is a market like area and a place for kids to play. Not only did they take away space, the British also raised prices in the bazaar and Indians were unable to afford food and other necessities they need in order to survive. Rukmani and her husband Nathan can scarcely provide food for their children and themselves. This is how British colonialism has impacted the Indian village and Rukmani's family negatively.
2)"Why do you not demand—cry out for help—do something? There is nothing in this country, oh God there is nothing!" (Markandaya 48)
This quote shows how British colonialism has impacted foreigners negatively. Kenny was a man of hope always helping others including the time he helped Rukmani to conceive. But once Colonialism came, things turned for the worst and all the hope left in Kenny was gone causing him to believe nothing could be done, that nothing was left in their country. This is how Colonialism impacted foreigners, such as Kenny, negatively.
“In her last months my father sent for the new doctor who had settled in the village… people spoke well of him, though he was a foreigner” (Markandaya 18-19).
ReplyDeleteColonialism had a positive impact on India. When Rukmani’s mother becomes ill, her father calls Kennington, the new doctor that had settled in the village, to come see her. Kennington, also known as Kenny, is a British doctor who had recently arrived in the village. Kenny gave Rukmani’s mother powders and pills that eased her. This shows how Colonialism had a positive effect on India because due to the British conquering India they now have better doctors like Kenny.
“We had to sell our goat,” I said. “I can no longer afford to buy milk, but while my son is young and needs it I will give it to him” (Markandaya 33).
Colonialism had a negative impact on India. Rukmani and her husband were going through hard times and had to sell their goat which provided them with milk. Rukmani’s youngest child was only three years old and needed milk. Even though he was too old to be breast fed it was the only way Rukmani could supply him with milk. Colonialism had a negative impact on India because it made products such as milk unaffordable to the villagers.
1)“My father sent for the new doctor who had settled in the village…..he was a foreigner” (Markandaya 18).
ReplyDeleteThis impacted the Indian Village in a positive way. Rukmani’s mother becomes greatly ill, causing Rukmani’s father to call for the new doctor of the village. The doctor happens to be a foreigner names Kenny. Kenny is most likely from Britain since he was described as having pale white skin and sunken eyes the color of a kingfisher’s wing, neither green nor blue (Markandaya 19). Having foreigners there can only mean that more British people were likely to come especially since it would help Britain with colonizing in India. Colonialism has a positive effect because it meant the Indian villagers would then have a doctor who knows a lot about medicine and how to take care of a person. Just like Kenny did with Rukmani’s mother.
2)“We had to sell out goats…I can no longer afford to buy milk but while my son is young and needs it. I will give it to him,” (Markandaya 33).
This impacted the Indian Village in a Negative way. Rukmani and her family are having a hard time getting food and money. Especially since when the British invaded the Indian Village money and food becamescarce. Rukmani has been forcing breast feeding onto her Son causing her breast to be sore (Markandaya 33). Rukmani is basically sacrificing her body and taking in all the pain of her sore breast since she cannot afford to buy milk. Milk, that is needed for Rukmani’s young son, Selvam. Rukmani then cannot rely on her goat for money because she sold it. Therefore, causing colonialism to impacted the village and Rukmani’s family in a negative way.
1) “Hundreds of men…They are pulling down houses around the maidan and there is a long line of bullock carts carrying brick” (Markandaya 29).
ReplyDeleteColonialism had a negative impact on Indian villages. Ajun, the oldest son of Rukmani, had come from another village with news to inform his family and the people of his community about changes that would soon reach them. He reports that in the other village, foreign men tore down houses and disrupted the open fields, or maidans. He also tells them they had many bricks. Soon enough the foreign men reach their village, and as they did in the other village, begin to disrupt it. They begin to build a building in their maidan, build huts around the maidan, make their own community in the village of the Indians, and make loud noise. The children no longer have a place to play, there is no longer peace and quiet, and the Indians are being controlled in their own village. This shows that Colonialism had a negative impact on Indian villages because it disrupted their community.
2) “The red-faced white man came back with a foreman, and took charge of everything. He did not live in the village but came and went, while his men took over the huts that had lain empty, the ones who came last settling beside the river, bringing their wives and children with them, or dotting the maidan even more thickly with the huts they built for themselves and their families” (Markandaya 32-33).
Colonialism had a negative impact on the people of India. White, foreign men came and not only did they settle on the Indian’s village, but they took control as well. They built huts and made for the village to be more crowded than before. This is a negative effect because the Indian’s no longer had the same power or environment. Their village became more crowded, it reeked of alcohol, it wasn't quiet, and it was becoming more of a town. The villagers, such as Rukmani, were forced to accept and live with these new changes, but most wished things could return as before.
1)"With six children to feed we could no longer afford to eat all the vegetables we grew. Once a week I would cut and pack our garden produce, selecting the best and leaving the spoil or bruised vegetables for ourselves, cover the basket with leaves and set off for the village"(Markandaya 26-27).
ReplyDeleteColonialism affected everyone from the Indian Village including Rukmani and her family negatively. After Britain invaded and took over they don't have control or power to do anything. The vegetables Rukmani grew could longer satisfy her and her family's need. She needs to sell most of her produce in the village to make money for her family. It has to do with colonialism because now Britain took control and they have all the money. So the people of India has no money to feed their families.
2)" They had invaded our village with clatter and din, had taken from us the maiden where our children played, and had made the bazaar prices too high for us" (Markandaya 31-32.
This quote shows that colonialism affected everyone in the Indian Village in a negative way. The British took things from them after they took control. They also increased the prices on food and other resources that they would need. Many families like Rukmani and her family can't afford for food. The British left the Indian Village very weak and they were unable to do anything.
"When I recall all the help Kali gave me with my first child, I am ashamed... sweeping, cleaning, washing, and cooking. She even took pains to water the garden( Markandaya 19)."
ReplyDeleteColonialism impacted Rukmani positively when she was becoming a mother. British colonization drove her away from her wealthy home. When she married Nathan he lead her to her new home . In this new neighborhood, she met Kali. When Rukmani became a mother, a lot of things needed to be done. It was difficult to acomplish these tasks when you have a newborn. Luckily, her neighbor, Kali assisted her with duties in order for Rukmani to rest and take care of her first child, Ira. Colonialism created a positive impact because when Rukmani moved to her new home, she was able to receive help from a neighbor when she could not do chores on her own. This is how the quote portrays colonialism affecting Rukmani positively as she is becoming a mother.
" Sometimes I would go to see my parents, but seldom, since there was so much to be done in my own home; and my mother, knowing this, did not reproach me for my long intervals between my visits( Markandaya 21)."
Colonialism affected Rukmani negatively as she was becoming a mother. Now that Rukmani married someone below her status, she has alot of work to do.When she was in a higher class, she didn't have to do anything. However, because she married into a lower social rank, she had to complete similar chores as her neighbors to fit in and sustain her family. This is negative because it prevents her from seeing her family and do things she would normally do. Before colonialism, Rukmani had close ties with her family. That relationship does not exist anymore because of the many jobs she has to complete.Rukmani completes many chores because things do not come easily to her, since she is low class.Instead of doing as she wished, she had to learn to do chores like gardening. She would have never learned to be a gardener if she married a wealthy man. Colonialism affected Rukmnai negatively because it made her become a person she never expected to be.
1)“ I think that already he foresaw his livelihood being wrested from him, for he salted and tanned his own skins, making them into chaplis for those in the village who wore them”(Markandaya 31).
ReplyDeleteThe British had begun to establish industries in villages within India. The building that was being constructed was a tannery. Kannan specialized in the field of tanning in his village and had worked very hard to get in that position. Kannan felt all his life’s work being taken from him since he won’t be able to compete against an industry that would be able to deliver high quality products at a cheaper price. This is sign of colonialism because the British are beginning to industrialize India and many villages are becoming towns due to the many industries that are being constructed. This would negatively impact India since it will put many owners of small businesses out of a job since they won’t be able to compete against industries that are able to produce products quicker, cheaper and with better quality. Overall industrialization helped India to advance but also forced people out of their jobs like Kannan.
2)” Day and night women twisted rope, since they could sell as much as they made, and traders waxed prosperous selling their goods to the workman” (Markandaya 31).
The workmen spent lavishly and with them came great business for the Indian village. Indians began to sell their goods to the workmen because they paid well and bought a lot. Villagers began to compete against one another in order to sell their goods causing people to become filled with greed. This is a sign of colonialism because the British began to colonize in India; many of the workers settled down with their families near the places where they worked. This positively impacts India because many of the villagers were able to make more money selling their goods to the workmen and in doing so they were able to support their family. This shows how colonialism impacted India in a positive aspect.
1."But what could I buy with the money with prices so high everywhere?" said Rukmani (Markandaya 32).
ReplyDeleteThis quote shows that Colonialism had a negative impact on Rukmani and her community. Rukmani could not afford to buy sugar, dhal, and ghee for her family, since the British came to built their tannery in her village. The British made the prices of goods higher than the amount that the Indians could afford. This made the Indians unable to buy the goods that they need. This is inhumane because the British did not consider the Indian's lifestyle at all. Since the Indians did not have much money to begin with, the British made problems worse. Colonialism impacted the Indian life in a negative way.
2. “Are you not glad that our village is no longer a clump of huts but a small town? Soon there will be shops and tea stalls, and even a bioscope..,” said Kunthi (Markandaya 33).
This quote shows that Colonialism had a positive impact on Rukmani and her village. The place where Rukmani, the main character, lived used to be a small insignificant town. Since there will “soon be shops”, the author wants the reader to know that the village is expanding, due to colonialism. As Rukmani’s town expands, there will be more jobs and trade, leading to an increase in profits. Due to colonialism, Rukmani’s town changed from an insignificant “clump of huts” into a town capable of creating profits for the villagers living in it. This is a positive impact because the British helped the Indians develop their insignificant town into a profitable place, improving the Indian’s life.
“As it was, we were going short of many things. We no longer had milk.... curds and butter were beyond our means except on rare occasions ( Markandaya 28).
ReplyDeleteColonialism affected Rukmani and her family negatively. Once Britain colonized, or conquered, India, they had the rights to interfere with the Indian economy, finances and government. The British people, also known as the “white people,” began to use resources that civilians used every day in India. The white people raised prices of natural goods. The Indians are already in poverty, so this made them sink deeper into poverty. Rukmani, an Indian, had difficulties to support her family because she had to sell her goat, in order to earn money to buy milk for her children (Markandaya 37). Therefore, Britain’s invasion in India affected the Indian village negatively, because the Indians now have lack of resources and money
“There is nothing in this country, oh god, there is nothing!” (48).
Colonialism has affected India and Kenny negatively. After replacing officials in India, British people began to change everything that was within India. They nearly took away everything from the civilians in India and even a foreigner named Kenny. He was a man who had high hopes for anything that was occuring, and he would help anyone without a single thought. Kenny did not need to feel obligated to help another in need, for example, Rukmani. Although, Kenny was a white foreigner and might have been considered a British to everyone, he has lost all hope for humanitiy in India. Unlike other white people, he could actually relate to the indians in some way, shape or form... now he believes there is nothing else can be done to help this country in its time of need. Thus, showing the true aspects of colonialism and how it is ruining many lives.
1."But what could I buy with the money with prices so high everywhere? No sugar or dhal or ghee have we tasted since they came, and should have had none so long as they remained" (Markandaya 28).
ReplyDeleteColonialism had an impact on India when Britain took over India, where Rukmani lived in. Rukmani got married and moved to another place in India with her husband, Nathan. The British people caused a negative influence on Rukmani's hometown, which results in her Father's lost of authority of being a headman. The British people invaded India and started building huts made out of bricks in the village where Rukmani and her husband lives in. The British bought many food, which results in the prices of marketing to increase. This impact inflicted on Rukmani's family negatively because food became scarce to the point that there was "no sugar or dhal or ghee... since they came" (Markandaya 28). Rukmani's family couldn't afford to buy food at high prices since she and her husband were poor. Ever since the British took over India, the Indians never had peace but trouble and extreme difficulties. Colonialism influenced India in a negative way.
2. " The red face white man came back with a foreman, and took charge of everything... with the huts they built for themselves and their families" (Markandaya 28-29).
Colonialism also impacted India negatively. The British brought their men to the village where Rukmani lived "every day for two months"(Markandaya27). After the British men finished building huts, they brought a moment of joy to the villagers; the villagers thought "the men" were friendly and nice. Unexpectedly, the "red face man "(British man) build huts for his people but then, the Indians mistakenly thought the huts were build for them instead. The British man came back to "take control". This caused misery for the people since it was their land. The British conquered Rukmani's childhood village already. Now, the British is taking control of Rukmani's new town. The Indians are losing power. On the other hand, the British are slowly gaining more power and land over India. It is a negative effect on the Indians.

“They had invaded our village with clatter and din, had taken from us the maidan where our children played, and had made the bazaar prices too high for us.” (Markandaya 31-32)
ReplyDeleteColonialism has a negative impact on the Indian village and its people. Due to the British colonizing, it caused the Indian village's children to lose their place to play. Also because of British colonizing, it made items in the bazaar,or marketplace, more expensive. This is a negative impact because it raised the prices of items the villagers need and occupied the space their children play in.
"The overseer listened respectfully and then began to telling us to go, not to disturb the men...telling us to go.'As if he owned us'"
Colonialism has a negative impact on the Indian village and its people. The British people are taking advantage of the villagers just because they already colonize. Also because of the British colonizing, they think that they are the owners and masters of the area despite the fact they are not. Colonialism had a negative impact because it makes the British cocky of their social hierarchy over the Indian villagers.
"We had to sell our goat", I said. "I can no longer afford to buy milk, but while my son is young and needs it, I will give it to him." (Markandaya 33)
ReplyDeleteHere, Rukmani and her family have been significantly affected by the British Colonization of India. It has got up to the point where she cant afford a basic household need, milk, therefore having to sell a valuable goat for it. The affect of Colonialism on India was negative. Before the British invasion, Rukmani would once or twice a week "go to the village to buy sugar, ghee and vegetables" (Markandaya 9). However, after Colonialism Rukmani, and many other find that it is difficult to get these basic needs. This is negative because it is leaving many people with little or no food, finding it hard to get by and support themselves and their families.
"Thereafter he brought me a little cow's milk when he could, or sent it with one of the children from the village..." (Markandaya 33).
Here, Kenny, a foreign doctor in India has figured out that Rukmani cannot afford milk due to the Colonization of India. He thereafter buys her milk whenever he could. Colonialism in this case has a positive affect on Kenny. It has made him perform humane acts upon not only Rukmani but others as well. Even though he is a foreigner to India, he still gives back to the people what he could. Although at times like this, Colonialism brought the bad out in people, due to the fact that most can not afford basic household needs nor support themselves, this instead, brought the good out in Kenny, thus making it have a positive impact on him.
“The overseer… began telling us to go, not to disturb the men, although for so long he had been glad of many watchers. In our maidan, in our village he stood, telling us to go. ‘As if he owned us…’” (Markandaya 30-31)
ReplyDeleteIn Rukmani’s village, a tannery is being built, which introduces new workers into the area. The operation is looked over by a white man, which proves that he most likely comes from Britain. This foreshadows the development of the British migrating to India, which illustrates the process of colonialism. The production of the tannery has an influence on both the current lifestyle of the villagers and the economic conditions of the village. The villagers spend much time looking at the workers, as well as the production of the tannery. Due to social hierarchy within India, the owner considered himself superior as compared to the villagers. Social hierarchy in India is based on ethnicity, and because the owner was white, he regarded the residents as inferior. He felt that due to this superiority, he could demand actions that will be taken by the villagers. He considers himself to have “owned” the villagers, and force them out of their home. He feels that he is the head of authority, and has influence over the inhabitants. This has a negative impact on the people of India. This is because a man who is considered to be an outsider, whom they have never met, is controlling them seen previous to this occurrence. The villagers have the ability to make their own choices, however, due to social hierarchy, he feels that he has a dominant position within society.
“They had invaded our village with clatter and din, had taken from us the maidan where our children played, and had made the bazaar prices too high for us.” (Markandaya 31-32)
This quote illustrates the impact colonialism had on Rukmani and her family, India, and also the foreigners in India. In chapter four, a tannery is being constructed in Rukmani’s village. A tannery is where animal hides are cured for a variety of uses. The workers who work on building the tannery are men who are not associated with the village they are working in. Because of this, the villagers consider these men outsiders who come from the outside world that they are unfamiliar with. An Indian boss supervises these workers, and the whole operation is looked over by a white man. This white man is British, which is an example of colonialism taking place within India. More specifically, the overall production of the tannery was a result of British influence since the British were looking over the manufacturing of the building. Colonialism benefits the British because it provides them with opportunities to invest money in order to make a profit. The tannery is an example of cause and effect. For instance, it changed how people work within the village, and affected the economy of the area. The workers were paid well, and villagers also became engaged in providing necessary materials such as rope, bricks, fruit, and sweetmeats. Rukmani benefitted from the economy because she was able to sell her pumpkins and plantains for a better price, however, the prices of many necessities and crops began to increase (32). Due to this effect, Rukmani and her family stayed in the same economic circumstance regardless that they obtained more money for their crops. This leaves the family lacking certain foods that are too expensive to buy. On the other hand, the increase money does provide a fine dowry for Ira, the oldest daughter. The tannery had a negative impact on India. Due to the construction of the tannery, workmen brought their families into the village to live with them in little huts. Although they were isolated from villagers, they cause pollution within the village. More specifically, they contaminated the air with the smell of liquor, as well as clamor of their daily activities (33).
How could you clarify this by shortening it?
Delete"I will pay you four annas a dozen for brinjals, and six annas each for pumpkins, if they are large.'he was offering almost double what Old Granny paid (Markandaya 27).
ReplyDeleteColoniasm has impacted Rukmani postively. Rukmani was selling her crops for only little money to an Old Granny. Once Biswas, the moneylender, saw her selling her crops he wanted to buy from her. "Buying and selling" (27) was the bussiness Biswas wanted to do with Rukmani. Biswas saw that he can make alot of money out of the crops Rukmani grew. Rukmani crop selling was increasing because of Biswas and the old Granny buying them. This helped her tought times because "We never went hungry as some of the families were doing" (28). The money Rumani has recieved from the buyers allowed her to stay out of poverty. During this time economy was decreasing and many people did not have money to buy food, luckliy for Rukmani she had money and bought rice so her family will not starve.
"We had to sell out our goat,' I said. 'I can no longer afford to buy milk, but while my son is young and needs it I will give it to him" (Markandaya 37).
Coloniasm has impacted Rukmani negatively. Rukmani selling her crops was not enough money for her family to live on. When Rukmani sees Kenny, the doctor that helped her have children, she invites him to her hut. She shows Kenny her children and introduces her husband to him. After that day, Kenny starts to go and visit Rukmani more often. " Once he came when i was suckling Selvam , my youngest son" ( 37). Rukmani's first two children had been fed milk, butter, and rice, but now when Rukmani had her third child she could not afford to fed him the same as her other two kids. Rukmani did not have the money she had before to buy her child milk, she had to sell her goat because the shortage of money. This affected her negatively because her " breasts were sore where the child's mouth had been" (37). Since she could not afford milk she let her child drink her milk, her child is three years old and not suppose to drink out of her breast. The economy has grown worse because the British stayed in India.
1) "My lord, my benefactor," I cried. "Many a time I have longed to see you. Now at last you come," and I bent down to kiss his feet..."(Markandaya 31).
ReplyDeleteEven though Colonialism impacted India at some points negatively, in this case, Colonialism impacted the Indian village and the people in a positive way. When the British had conquered India around the 20th century, they had gained wealth and power. Despite this fact, there were some British people that were willing to help the poor Indians. The "benefactor" is a term that Rukmani used in order to describe the British doctor, Kenny. Kenny did not only help to cure the workers at the tannery, but he also tried to cure Rukmani's mother and caused a revolution to Rukmani. He did everything he could just so Rukmani would give birth to sons, and both hers and Nathan's dream came true all thanks to this man. As for her mother, he gave all the help as possible and "he told her no lies, and she trusted him"(Markandaya 19). Even though she died, Rukmani still looked up to him, was really thankful and felt comfortable around him. Therefore, a British person like Kenny who has a kind heart and never betrays people, had a positive impact and influence towards the Indian villagers.
2) "...but what could I buy with the money with prices so high everywhere? No sugar or dhal or ghee have we tasted since they came, and should have had none so long as they remained" (Markandaya 28).
Due to Britain colonizing India, Colonialism had a negative impact towards the Indian villagers. When the British conquered India, they had raised the prices very high. First of all, India is a huge country that has a lot of beneficial resources and is known for center trade. Due to this fact, the British wanted to take advantage of them and keep their resources to themselves. Unfortunately, this was a bad timing for the British to invade since Rukmani had six little children to feed. She had a huge family and was not content to live in poverty. British had all the power to themselves and became really wealthy due to this disaster. They had no hearts ,whatsoever, and only thought about themselves and not about the Indian people who had suffered. White, British man like Kenny are the only ones who tried to help, but sadly there was less of them and more of evil. Overall, Colonialism had a bad impact towards the Indians and did not benefit them most of the time.
Quotes:
ReplyDelete-"He came often, sometimes even when he was not summoned; and his presence, as much as the powder and pills he made her take, gave my mother her ease"(Markandaya 23)
-"Come and see me," he said at last. "It is possible I may be able to do something..."(Marandaya 24)
Colonialism gave a positive response and helped Rukmani and her family. Rukmani was facing a great crisis. For seven years, she was unable to become pregnant with a child after her first child Ira. With only one girl, work on the farm would gradually get harder as the couple got older. At the same time, Rukmani's mother had grown ill with a fatal disease. One day, a doctor came to the town, a foreigner, a man by the name Kennigton, or Kenny for short. Rukmani's father made him tend her mother and, "He came often, sometimes even when he was not summoned; and his presence, as much as the powder and pills he made her take, gave my mother her ease"(Markandaya 23). Although Kenny was unable to cure her, he was able to ease Rukmani's mother pain and make her leave from this world painless. Even after this event, Kenny is still willing to offer his help. He knew about Rukmani's situation from speaking with her mother but still made her tell him. After she told him about not being able to bare anymore children after Ira,"Come and see me," he said at last. "It is possible I may be able to do something..."(Marandaya 24). Kenny is just a foreigner doctor, yet he offers to help Rukmani as if he were her close friend. In the end, Rukmani was able to have children again(Markandaya 24). Without the help of Kenny, Rukmani's mother would suffer through all the pain until she met a excruciating death. Also, without Kenny, Rukmani may have never been able to have the five sons she has now. Colonialism can be a positive aspect and helpful for different people.
1) "...and his presence, as much as the powders and pills he made her take, gave my mother her ease" (Markandaya 19).
ReplyDeleteRukmani's mother was very sick and dying. Rukmani's mother was in great pain, so the family asked Doctor Kennington who had a high reputation in the village to help Rukmani's mother. This is an example of better medical treatment, which would be a positive impact of colonialism. Better medical treatment brought the sick in India an easier life, because the sick no longer has to be tortured by the pain they had when having a disease. Just like Rukmani's mother, she was at "her ease" after having the medicine of Kennington's. This is not Rukmani's opinion, but a fact because when Rukmani's mother "died it was in the same way, without a struggle" (Markandaya 19). Better medical treatment allowed patients to have less pain, which is something that did not happen before colonialism. Therefore, the quote is an example of positive impact of colonialism.
2)'"We had to sell our goat," I said. "I can no longer afford to buy milk, but while my son is young and needs it I will give it to him"' (Markandaya 33).
Because of colonialism, British came into Rukmani's village and raise the bazaar prices too high for the villagers (Markandaya 27). Therefore, Rukmani found that she was unable to get what her son needs and had to breast-feed the child even though he passed the age for breast-feeding. This showed a negative impact of colonialism. Colonialism caused the Indian villagers unable to get their food at a low price. This means that the villagers are not getting enough food or nutrients that are needed daily, causing the villagers to be unhealthy. This is not an opinion; Rukmani had to sell the family's goat just to get milk which was not something that had to be done before the British raise the bazaar prices. Yet after Rukmani sold the goat, she still does not have enough milk because Rukmani was forced to breast-feed her son. Colonialism, in this case, was a negative impact in India.
1. "Ira was seven when my first son was born, and she took a great interest in the newcomer... as for Kunthi, she prefered to keep aloof. Her son was a sturdy youngster and would have been a good play-mate for my child; but, as the years went by, her visits to our house grew less and less frequent until as last we were meeting as strangers," (Markandaya 20).
ReplyDeleteThis quote is showing the way colonialism impacted India in a negative way. The way that Rukmani grew fond of her sons, made her depart from her closest friends, or neighbors, that now became just "strangers". This controlling of one can have a very strong influence over another. When Rukmani had the boys that she wanted, she expected more than what she asked for. This made her get off track and made her forget her loving friends and neighbors whom she cherished some moments with them.
2. "Ira had been fed well on milk and butter and rice; Arjun too, for he was the first boy. But for those who came after, there was less and less. Four more sons I bore in as many years-Thambi, Murugan, Raja, and Selvam... with six children to feed we could no longer afford to eat all the vegetables we grew," (Markandaya 22).
This quote is showing the way colonialism impacted India in a negaitive way. The author is basically stating the point where times have changed from when Ira was born, to when her last four sons were born. Things aren't the same anymore. For example, as Rukmani's family grew, and they need more things, such as food. They are becoming poor each day. Rukmani would've took care of "her buisness" if she didn't have as much as children she has today. Since she had more kids, things are becoming difficult for her, such as working, however, still managing to take care of them.
1. “They will be back, or others will take their place. And did you not benefit from their stay, selling your pumpkins and plantains for better prices than you did before?” (Markandaya 32).
ReplyDeleteColonialism impacted Rukmani and her family, India and the foreigners in India in both ways; positive and negative. Since the British are settling in India they are spreading out more their culture, which this will make it easier for them to take over Rukamani’s village. This might be a positive affect for India because since the British are building small towns. It helps India’s citizens to have easier asses to stores because they are having more things closer at their reach. Rukmani’s family is poor therefore as a solution she decides to sell pumpkins and plantains to support more her large family. Before colonialism Rukmani used to sell these items at lost cost. But based on this quote it shows that colonialism had a positive affect for Rukmani’s family because she is getting a better pay. This is something positive for them because it helped Rukmani and her husband to feed their large family. Although Rukmani is getting more money she is also wasting more money than before due to colonialism because high prices are everywhere (Markandaya 32).Because there are high prices all over India, it’s affecting India in a negative way because it’s causing a lot poverty among its citizens since they can no longer afford the same things they used to afford before to support their family. For example Rukmani can no longer give her family dhal, ghee and she cannot even use sugar no more because these items are getting too expensive (Markandaya 32). This shows that colonialism impacted Rukmani’s family, India and the foreigners in India in negative and positive ways.
2. “They have invaded our village with clatter and din, had taken from us the maiden where our children played” (Markandaya 31-32).
This quote shows that Colonialism had a more negative affect for India and Rukmani’s family. Since the British are settling in India they are destroying India’s citizens’ home land. This is making them feel unconformable because they feel they are being invaded because they are loosing control of their land. For example they took the “maiden which was the place where the kids played”. This affects India and Rukmani’s family in a negative way because the kids are loosing the only place where they find happiness, and the place where they can feel free and forget about the problems they have to deal with on their everyday lives. This shows that colonialism had a more negative affect on the way now people India interact with each other.
1. “They were very well paid, these men, some of them earning two rupees in a single day, whereas even in good times we seldom earned as much, and they bought lavishly: rice and vegetables and dhal, sweat meats and fruit” (Markandaya 27).
ReplyDeleteColonialism impacted Rukmani, her family, and India negatively. British men were building a tannery by destroying homes. The men working on the tannery are paid well and Indian traders were able to sell a large amount of food to them. The high amount of money the British earnt allowed Rukmani and other traders to raise the prices of their food. Although the Indians benefited from this, it was brief until the building was complete and the British men left. After the men left, the Indian traders had a large quantity of money, but the prices of food were too high to buy something. Colonialism negatively impacted Rukmani, her family, and India because it caused the prices of food to rise and families were not able to purchase food after the British left. Colonialism ultimately affected India negatively by causing economic imbalance.
2. “They are pulling down houses around the maidan and there is a long line of bullock carts carrying bricks” (Markandaya 25).
The British destroyed houses around the maidan, or open space to build a tannery. Colonialism negatively impacted the Indians because the British are invading the Indians’ village. The maidan was where the children played and is now replaced because the British believed that they had more authority than the Indians. The Indians were not informed about the tannery until the British came with carts of bricks and were already beginning to build it. The Indians then had to endure the noise and orders from the workmen. Colonialism negatively impacted the Indians because the British took land as if they owned Indians (26).
“With six children to feed we could no longer afford to eat all the vegetables we grew” (Markandaya 26).
ReplyDeleteThis shows how colonialism impacted the Indian village in a negative way. After Britain conquered India, India became lack of resources and people were becoming poor. In Rukmani’s household, they mostly eat the vegetables they grow but because of colonialism, Rukmani had to sell the vegetables she planted for her own to make money. Since she has six children, she had to uphold her responsibility to feed her children and selling the vegetables is the only way to support her family. Therefore, this shows colonialism impacted the Indian village negatively because people had to sell their things for the money to feed their family.
“But what could I buy with the money with the prices so high everywhere? No sugar or dhal or ghee have we tasted since they came” (Markandaya 31)
This shows how colonialism impacted the Indian village in negatively. In this quote, “they” is directly referring to the British men who built the new tannery. Rukmani disliked them even though they offered her a high price on her vegetables. However, Rukmani disliked them because of their appearance in the village, the prices for resources increased which effected a lot of families weren't able to get food for their survivals. In this case, Rukmani wasn't able to get food neither, that’s why she didn’t like the British men around her. This shows colonialism impacted the Indian village in a negative way because since the prices went up, it reduced the amount of resources that people were able to get.
"They invaded our village with clatter and din, had taken from us the maidan where our childern played, and had made the bazaar prices too high for us"(Markandaya 32-33).
ReplyDeleteRukmani describes the British, "They", invasion as "clatter and din," which shows that it was an unpleasen event. This has had a negative impact on India because now the childern have no place to play, They took away the childern's fun times. They also highered the prices which the people couldn't afford. Rukmani complains later on that she won't be able to afford food and feed her childern(Markandaya 32).
"They came back... The red-faced white man came back with a foreman, and took charge of everything... while his men took over the huts that had lain empty... bringing their wives and childern with them, or dotting the maidan even more thickly with the huts they built for themselves and their families"(Markandaya 33).
This is when the British returned for a second time to India, the red-faced white man is suppose to be a British man. This shows a negative impact on India because the British were taking control of everything, which means that they are going to change the way the people lived like they did the first time they came(highered prices & got rid of maidan). They also started to bring their families over which they did by clearing lands and maidans to build huts for them to live in.

ReplyDelete1) “They had invaded our village with clatter and din, had taken from us the maidan where our children played, and had made the bazaar prices too high for us” (Markandaya 31)
ReplyDeleteThis quote shows that colonialism had a negative impact on the Indian Village. The maidan was an area in Rukmani's village that was devoted to children so they could have the opportunity to play. However when the British took over, they had began constructing a building in this area. British workers stayed in the village until the construction was done and during that time market prices started to rise since the British were buying items at a higher price. This led to many Indian families being unable to afford buying goods for their familiy. This is how colonialism had a negative impact on the Indian village.
2) “We had to sell out goats... I can no longer afford to buy milk but while my son is young and needs it. I will give it to him" (Markandaya 33)
This quote shows that colonialism had a negative impact on the Indian village. After the market price rose, Rukmani is unable to afford milk for her son. She had already sold her goats, but she is still unable to sustain her son. Rukmani is then forced to breastfeed her son which overtime caused her to feel sore. This shows that colonialism caused Rukmani to have extreme difficulty in supporting her family. That's why colonialism has had a negative impact on the Indian village.
1) "They had invaded our village with clatter and din, had taken from us the maidan where our children played, and had made the bazaar prices too high for us"(Markandaya 31-32)
ReplyDeleteIn this quote the Britain government had restricted the Indian people from doing many things. Great Britain invaded there village and forced unethical laws upon the Indian people. Colonialism had a negative impact on both the parents and their children in India. Colonialism had a negative impact on the parents because prices at the market were too high and some people weren't able to afford the necessary things needed to live. This affected the children negatively because the British took away their maidan, which was where the kids played.
2) "We had to sell our goat", I said. "I can no longer afford to buy milk, but while my son is young and needs it, I will give it to him."(Markandaya 37)
In this quote Rukmani can't afford milk because of the British government. Milk is one of the vital resources for people, and should be affordable. The British government is being unethical toward the poor people of India. With the prices so high Rukmani had no choice but to sell her goat. Colonialism had a negative impact on the people's lives in India. Colonialism had a negative impact on India because before colonialism Rukmani got all of her necessary resources from the market, and now they can't even afford milk.
As the book progressed, colonialism had a vast impact affecting Rukmani, her family, India, and foreigners. After having six children, Rukmani and her husband Nathan were having trouble supporting their larger family. Since Rukmani and Nathan had a farm, Rukmani would usually sell their goods to an old woman in the village. This changed after the British colonized India. After India was colonized, banks were introduced to Rukmani’s village. The bankers or “moneylenders” were wealthy British colonists who were disliked by the villagers. Rukmani stated that “I would have passed after a brief salutation, for among us there is a dislike of the moneylending class, but he stood squarely in my path…The following week I sold almost my whole basket to him, keeping only a little for Old Granny. I did not like selling to him, although he paid me a better price. It was business and nothing else with him…but there you are, you cannot choose (Markandaya 23). Since the British colonized India, the “moneylenders” took business away from the villagers like Old Granny. This impacted people in different ways. Rukmani and her family were impacted positively since they would receive more money for the same amount of products they would sell. Therefore, Rukmani could make ends meet for her larger family. Foreigners were also impacted positively since they received tradable goods from the villagers. However, India as a whole was impacted negatively. In India, people were running low on resources and couldn’t do anything to help themselves. The village merchants like Old Granny lost business to the moneylenders since the moneylenders purchased the same goods for a higher price. Resources were low for everyone. Rukmani stated, “We no longer had milk in the house, except for the youngest child; curds and butter were beyond our means except on rare occasions. But we never went hungry as some of the families were doing. We grew our own plantains and coconuts, the harvests were good and there was always food in the house-at least a bagful of rice, a little dhal, if no more (Markandaya 24). Even though the moneylenders affected families like Rukmani’s positively, they affected most families negatively. Most families in India are large since the parents would bear many children. Few families like Rukmani’s are lucky enough to own a farm so they can support themselves. Since the majority of Indians did not own farms, they could not support themselves properly since business was being taken away by the wealthy British moneylenders. Therefore, India as a whole was impacted negatively by colonization.
ReplyDelete"And so I made a skirt for her, weaving bright colours into the white cotton that she might like it, and so she did for a time, wearing it gladly, twirling it about her as she spun round and round; but when the novelty had worn off, she became fractious and wanted to tear it from her(Markandaya 26)."
ReplyDeleteThis quote shows that Colonialism impacted Rukmani negatively. Rukmani made her daughter a skirt which was their culture and for a while, her daughter liked it. However, her daughter started disliking it.Colonialism impacted Rukmani negatively because it is wiping away Indian culture by having Rukmani's daughter slowly disliking the skirt her mother made for her.
"The overseer listened respectfully and then began telling us to go, not to disturb the men, although for so long he had been glad of so many watchers. In our maidan, in our village he stood, telling us to go(Markandaya 30)."
After Rukmani had children, hundreds of men went to the town where Rukmani resides and attracted a lot of attention. These visitors later started to tell the villagers to go away. This quote shows how Colonialism impacted Rukmani negatively by showing the visitors treating the villagers as if they owned them. Once Britain colonized India, a form of social hierarchy began which put the British above the Indians. This shows Colonization has impacted India negatively.
Are you sure this was all because of colonialism and not personal issues?
Delete"I turned away and, despite myself, the tears came, tears of weakness and disappointment; for what women want a girl for her first-born?"(Markandaya 19)
ReplyDeleteRukmani married a poor farmer, Nathan. A while after their marriage, Rukmani was pregnant. Soon, she gave birth to a baby girl. She was disappointed that her first child was a girl (Markandaya 19). This impacted Rukmani, her family, and India negatively because she wasn't happy about her child. Most women are grateful that their child is safely delivered but however Rukmani is disappointed because her child is a girl. She was so disappointed that she shed tears of weakness. This shows that colonialism effect people's thought about gender.
"We called our daughter Irawaddy, after one of the great river of Asia, for all things water was most precious to us:but it was too long a name for the tiny little thing she was, and soon became Ira"(Mankandaya 20).
Rukmani married a farmer and soon gave birth to a girl. They named their daughter Irawaddy after the name of a river in Asia. Water is the most precious thing to Rukmani and Nathan (Markandaya 20). This showed that colonialism impacted Rukmani and Nathan negatively. Out of all possible things in this world, water is the most important to them. Colonialism led Rukmani to marry a poor farmer. She live under poor conditions therefore she believed water is the most precious thing to her. They can't afford anything but water is a free resource that they had. Even though, water is very important for daily living, but there are other luxury things in the world that is precious to those who are not effect by Colonialism. Water is so precious to Rukmani and Nathan that they named their daughter after a river. Colonialism effect people in India to be less wealth making them think that what they have is the best.
I really like your ANA but for the first quote, how did Colonialism had a negative impact on Rukmani for having a girl?
DeleteSorry for late reply but thanks. Colonialism had a negative impact on Rukmani for having a girl because colonialism had changed people's thought about gender. People like Rukmani want to have a boy to help his father farm in the future and have knowledge.
DeleteColonialism did not change people's thoughts on gender.

ReplyDelete“Come and see me, It is possible I may be able to do something…Remember I do not promise,” (Markandaya 23).
The love that kept Rukmani and her husband together brought upon many happy and sorrowful moments into their lives. Soon, Rukmani and her husband were expecting a baby, it turned out to be a girl, which Rukmani and her husband both mourned about. In their culture, it was brought the belief that a baby born of a male gender meant to be better than a baby born of a female, since male were thought of as someone who could continue the father’s line and walk beside him on land (20). For so much time, Rukmani and her husband spent on trying to obtain a son of their own but they couldn’t. Although, Rukmani’s husband had soon begun to take in more interest in Ira, his baby girl, both couples still wanted a son. Colonialism had brought a positive affect on Rukmani and her family after Rukmani’s mother had passed away. The death of Rukmani’s mother brought the experience of Rukmani meeting a white man named Kennington, Kenny for short. Since, India was conquered by Britain, this brought many more “paled skin” (23) people like Kenny into India. Rukmani was impacted positively by colonialism because she went to seek for help from the British man, Kenny, a doctor. Rukmani asked Kenny to help her solve her problem of not being able to have a son of her own and he had agreed on helping her. Kenny, did indeed help Rukmani obtain her very own son in methods that we do not know of. Colonialism brought the exposure of British people to India which had gave Rukmani an experience of meeting Kenny, which brought her happiness because Kenny was able to help her obtain her desires, her very own son.
“Yes, but what could I buy with the money with prices so high everywhere? No sugar or dhal of ghee have we tasted since they came, and should have had none so long as they remained,” (Markandaya 32).
Rukmani and her husband lived quite happily after having more than one son in their household. Although, Rukmani and her husband both obtained more children in their house, this meant that more food was in need to feed their children and themselves. Rukmani and her husband’s fields of crops were still very much enough for their survival but they needed to divide it in smaller portions with the consideration of feeding their children as well (28). Colonialism had impacted Rukmani and India in a negative way. The village had grown much less spacious, as speaking in terms of how small the village itself was before a group of men had charged in and made themselves comfortable. These groups of men worked hard to built huts which had taken the spot of an maidan where children used to play in (31-32). These groups of men can be assumed to be British people because since India is not small it took time for the British to invade each area of India. These men had the power to build whatever they pleased and raised however high in prices of food they wanted which can support the assumption of these men as British people since British people had all power now. The event of India being dominated by Britain (Colonialism) lead to a great difference of power in men in terms of where they’re from or what race. British people, or the group of men that “invaded” the village of where Rukmani had settled in, were influenced by colonialism to act on how much power they have. Raising prices on food made Rukmani and everyone in India more prone to sinking into poverty. Rukmani, her husband and their children were already being exposed to very limited food to satisfy their life. Colonialism, created the act of these British men in increasing prices which made Rukmani’s life much more difficult to manage.
