  1. 1) “Kunthi’s two eldest sons were among the first in the village to start work at the tannery, and between them they brought home more than a man’s wages.” (Markandaya 50)

The British influence helped the people of the Indian village. A tannery is a place where animal skin gets tanned, or used to make other materials, which is owned by the British in this book. Kunthi, Rukmani’s rival, had two of her sons working at a tannery. Kunthi’s two oldest sons are Indians. Although they are working for foreigners, they get paid more than an average Indian man’s wage, or in other words, they get paid more than the people of their own kind. This shows a positive impact in India because ever since Britain took over it, the people of the Indian village were able to earn more money for a living.

    2) “He was unable to compete with the other bigger shopkeepers whom the easy money to be had from the tanners had drawn to the new town.” (Markandaya 51)

The British influence harmed the Indian people. In this quote, “he” is referred to Janaki’s husband. Janaki’s husband is named Hanuman and he was a general merchant (Markandaya 13). Janaki is another one of Rukmani’s acquaintance, who is also an Indian. Although many jobs were formed when Britain invaded India, it was difficult for older businesses to run their business, when there were many new shops formed, so then the older shopkeepers closed their shops, and returned back to their hut (Markandaya 51). The British had a negative influence on the Indians, because many people lost their jobs and had no choice but to go home, due to the new and larger businesses that are opening.

  2. 1) “Yet they were good sons, considerate of us, patient with others, always giving us a fair share of their earnings. With their money we began once again to live well” (Markandaya 57).

British influence helped the Indian people. Rukmani’s two sons, Thambi and Arjun, began to work for a living in the tannery, to earn money and feed their whole family well. With the money, Rukmani saved from her sons, she had chances to store up necessities for the future. British influence ultimately helped rebuild a family who were broke and on the line of survival because of the amount of siblings and harvests. The British influence is basically the tannery which was built and owned by the British. The tannery helped by providing jobs to the poor. This was helpful because a while back there was a huge thunder storm during the monsoon season which came earlier than expected. When the thunder storm hit, it caused a lot of damage with breaking down houses and ruining harvests. British influence helped by providing jobs for those in search and in need of one. Without a proper job, Rukmani’s family would've probably been starved. British influence helped rebuild a small economy on the verge of death by providing well-paid jobs.

    2) “Take it or leave it. I can get double that sum from the tanners, but because I know you-“(Markandaya 47).

British influence harmed the Indian people. The villagers had been left nearly homeless and ruined during this time when the monsoons and thunder storm came around the same time. While the thunder storms were heavy and drastically dangerous the monsoons only did more harm. Monsoons are defined as traditional reversing winds, which are causes of many different types of storm; in this case a thunder storm. Rukmani and her family are left to starve because of the British influence in industrializing with the new building known as the tannery. The influence of the British led to the market of industrialization and higher prices, which not all people can afford the raise. British influence harmed the villagers because now that many of the harvests are ruined along with shops, only the tannery workers and British could afford to buy, leaving everyone else out to survive on their own. This is harming the Indian people by basically narrowing the market down for only the rich to be able to afford basic, everyday food. The people now have find alternate ways to survive due to the harmful influence of the British.

  3. 1) "By the time they had entered their late teens they were earning good wages, a rupee for each day's work, and without fail they would hand me their earnings..."(Markandaya 63).

The quote is saying that the Britains had an positive impact on India. The tannery provided good wages to the workers. A tannery is a place where tanning is carried on. Some of the workers were villagers seeking for a job they can count on, and working at the tannery was the right job for them. The "they" Rukmani is referring to his two older sons: Arjun and Thambi. Rukmani' sons having paid a rupee a day is a lot, since they were in poverty. A rupee is a coin and the currency of India. Rukmani saying that they earned good wages, means that the Britains had were kind enough to paid them a fair wage. Having a rupee gave them the ability to buy more seeds to plant crops and also more clothing for the family. The Britains providing them a good wage led to the family having enough to eat every night. This shows how the Britains had a positive impact on Rukmani's family and other Indians.

2)"Sivaji came to collect his master's dues and his face fell when he saw how much was lost, for he was a good man and he felt for us"(Markandaya 71).

This quote shows how the Britains had negative impact on the Indians. The "master" this quote is referring to is the Britains who seize the land and made the Indians pay their dues if they wanted land to plant crops. It was a difficult season where there weren't any rain for the crops. Since they didn't have any crops, they didn't have any money to pay the rent. Rukmani was so poor they had to sell their clothing from their marriage in order to have enough money for their dues.(Markandaya 74). After selling all the clothing and utensils it wasn't even enough to pay half of the dues.(Markandaya 76). Sivaji was just kind enough to go away with less than half of the rent. After the Britains colonize India people had to pay rent which led to most people to live in poverty. This shows how the Britains have a negative impact on the Indians,

  4. 1)“He was unable to compete with the other bigger shopkeepers whom the easy money to be had from the tanners had drawn to the new town.” (Markandaya 51)

British influence harmed the people of India. "He," or Janaki's husband, owned a shop that was losing business. British influence led to people opening new shops in the town causing Janaki's husband to lose business and leading them to being poor. Although British influence led to employment of many other jobs, it led Indian people, such as Janaki's husband, become jobless and poor. British influence had a negative effect on people because many people lost their jobs and have to go back home due to a better, prosperous business.

2)"A few days later he began working at the tannery, and before long Thambi, my second son, had joined him" (Markandaya 56)

British influence has benefited the people of India. Rukmani's two sons, Arjun and Thambi, had earned a job at the tannery. A tannery is a place where animal hides are tanned. British influence benefited the people of India by supporting Rukmani's sons with jobs. With Rukmani's sons having employment, her family will earn money due to British influence of having their stores open. British influence benefited the Indian people because they supported people with jobs and money.

  5. 1. "When a whole week had passed thus, the tannery officials called a meeting to announce that those who did not return to work would be replaced... The next morning the tannery had its full complement again, most of them workers who had gone back, the remainder men who were only too glad to obtain employment" (Markandaya 65).
The British influence harmed the Indian people. Rukmani's sons demanded for more money. They felt that it was reasonable since they had little pay. The British took their eating time and all the workers didn't come to work for a whole week. The Indians thought that they could make the British listen to them ,however, The British threatened the Indians instead to come back and those "who did not return to work would be replaced". The British controlled the Indians. The British people conquered not only their land, but also their freedom. The Indians had no power against them. They tried to rebel but it resulted to failure. Some had lost their jobs. Those who ignored the last warning lead to hunger. The Indians had no place in social class. They were dominated by the British. The British harmed the Indians, who had lost complete control over their lives.
    2. " They are paying well." Arjun resumed. "It would be good for us to work again. It is not fitting that men should corrupt themselves in hunger and idleness.
"You may not have the knowledge for such work."
"They will teach us- they have said so"
    (Markandaya 67)
British influence helped the Indians. The British needed workers to work in the tea plantations of Ceylon, an island located in India, so they asked to recruit the Indians. They paid the workers well and the Indians won't have to starve. The British created many jobs for Indians. Not only were the Indians paid well, but also, The Indians didn't have to worry about starvation or the ability to support their family. Also, The British is giving opportunities to the Indians to save their family by working for them. They are even willing to "teach" the Indians that don't have "the knowledge for such work". The British aren't just leaving them doing the work without knowing how to do such job after being hired. This influence can lead to Indians learning a new skill and experience. The British are helping the Indians and supporting them in any possible way.

  6. “You see,” said Kunthi. “The tannery is a boon to us. Have I not said so since it began? We are no longer a village either, but a growing town” (Markandaya 50)

The British influence had a positive impact on the Indian village. Kunthi, who’s a villager, said herself that it helped her. Kunthi’s sons are working at the tannery and that helped their family because the tannery pay more wages than normal jobs in the village (Markandaya 50). The village also started to grow because the British people are building shops and buildings in the village. This British influence is a positive impact to the Indian village because people are now able to have jobs that pay more than enough salaries. The Indian village is poor and the jobs are a positive impact to them because it helps support themselves and their families financially.

“Indeed no,” said I, “for it is even as I said, and our money buys less and less” (Markandaya 50).

The British influence had a negative impact on the Indian village. Even though some people had good pay with the new works the British men provided, the prices in the market are going up. The British influence affected the people in the Indian village negatively because those who don’t work in the Tannery will not be able to support themselves and their family. Some people don’t even have enough money to have a full belly. The market price is only affordable to those who have family members who worked at a Tannery.

  10. 1) “Why do you keep this ghastly silence? Why do you not demand-cry out for help-do something? There is nothing in this country, oh god, there is nothing!” (Markandaya 48)

The British influence harmed the people of India. The Indian village has been destroyed by a storm that has lasted for very long, the storm destroyed everything. People’s homes, trees, food, farms, animals were destroyed in the storm, and even some people were killed. People had no food and some no home for a long period of time, and they still did not do anything about it. The British influence harmed the Indian people; it made them feel like it’s not their land anymore and they should not fight for it. The Indian people feel like they lost control over their own country, they gave up on everything.

    2) “Not a month went by but somebody’s land was swallowed up, another building appeared.” (Markandaya 51)

The British influence had helped the people of India. Life in India was not very advanced; there were not a lot of buildings or advanced things that other countries had. People lived in huts; poor shelters that were mostly build by people who had no experience in building, so their living conditions were not very good. The British influence had helped the people of India, because these buildings had good foundations, so they lasted longer and were stronger. These buildings had better living conditions than the huts, so it made India united as people and grow bigger together, “We are no longer a village either, but a growing town.” (Markandaya 50).

    1. Your first analysis was convincing, but I honestly don't think that the British people were the one that caused this destruction. It was no one to blame, but the storm. The storm was the one that destroyed the land, not the British people.

    2. Amy, when storm sandy destroyed some people's homes and they weren't getting any help, those people spoke out and demanded help.

      Delete
    3. After the storm, Rukmani first asked Hanuman for help, which is Janaki's husband, another Indian. Rukmani asked another Indian man for help, not another British man. In addition, they didn't demand for help, that's why Kenny said, "Why do you keep this ghastly silence? Why do you not demand.." (47-48), to Rukmani.

  12. 1)'“I do not know why people who have not seen us and who not know us not should do this for us.” “Because they have means…and because they have learnt of your need”' (Markandaya 115).

British influence helped the people of India. Kenny, a British doctor, explained to Rukmani that there were plans being made to build a hospital in the town. He told her that his country, Britain, had given him some money to build the hospital. Rukmani did not understand why his country would do such a generous act. Kenny clarifies that Britain decided for this because they noticed that health was a major concern in India. In Rukmani’s town alone, the sick died in the streets and babies were born in the gutters due to the lack of hospitals (Markandaya 115). Britain had the means, or resources, so they took the necessary step and decided to provide Rukmani’s town with a hospital. This was helpful to the people of India because would soon be able to be treated and helped with medically. The hospital would provide the Indians with options and professional medical help.

2)“Somehow I had always felt the tannery would eventually be our undoing. I had known it since the day the carts had come with their loads of bricks and noisy dusty men, straining the clear soft greens that had once colored our village and cleaving its cool silences with clamour. Since then it had spread like weeds in an untended garden, strangling whatever life grew in its way. It had changed the face of the village beyond recognition and altered the lives of its inhabitants in a myriad of ways” (Markandaya 135).

British influence harmed the people of India. Rukmani and Nathan received news that the land they had lived on for thirty years was to be sold to tannery owners. Tanneries were brought by the British during the beginning of India’s colonization. Tanneries were built at numerous numbers and they flourished in Rukmani’s town. The tanneries caused many Indian businesses to close and the silence of the village was replaced with noise. Rukmani described the tanneries as powerful and cruel because it impacted her family, the Indian people, and the village negatively. Rukmani and her family were impacted negatively because they were being forced to move out of the land they tended. If the British had not introduced tanneries, tannery owners would not have bought the land that Nathan and Rukmani worked on.Therefore, this British influence was harmful to the people of India because it changed their lives as they knew it.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1)"We asked for more money and they took from us our eating times"(Makandaya 68).
So far the family seems to be going fine. Rukmani's sons are being paid well and Rukmani is able to store food aside for her family. But,when Rukmani and Nathan visit Arjun and Thambi at the tannery, they learn that their sons and other workers are being punished for fighting for better wages. In this situation,British influence has harmed Indian society because they do not want the Indians to have a voice. Based on the quote, the British took away the workers' eating time when they asked for more money. The British do not want the Indians to transcend their limits or possess any power.Maybe the workers wanted to have better wages to support a big family or any other issues dealing with more money. The fact that the Indians are not allowed to have a voice fighting for what they want is a harm. Therefore,British influence harmed Indian society.

2)"For the first time in years I brought clothes for the older children,a sari for myself, although he protested I brought for my husband a dhoti which he badly needed, since the other was in rags and barely covered his loins"(Makandaya 57).
Ever since Rukmani's sons,Arjun and Thambi gained their employment, the family benefitted from the money they earn. They were sustained with an abundance of food and Rukmani even brought clothes for her older children and a dhoti(loincloth) for her husband for the first time in years. This shows a great improvement in the family.Considering this, the British influence has benefitted the people of India.Formerly, Rukmani's children were suffering from their poor atmosphere and it had brought them years of depression. Now, that the British influence helped the Indian people, there is an availabilty of jobs with good pay and Rukmani can afford clothes for her family that are no longer in rags. The growth of their town has led to great benefits for families. This ofcourse gives hope to the Indian villages. This is how British influence has helped the Indian society.

  14. 1) “For the first time in years I bought clothes for the older children, and sari for myself, and although he protested I bought for my husband a dhoti which he badly needed, since the other was in rags and barely cover his loins” (Markandaya 57).

The British influence helped the people of India. Arjun and Thambi, Rukmani’s sons found work at the tannery. The tannery is a working place where the British people built to convert animal skin into leather. Rukmani’s family usually wears a cheap, torn piece of rag to cover themselves up. Since Arjun and Thambi were able to work in tanneries, they earned more than they used to. The British people had a positive effect on Indians. Rukmani can actually afford cloths for her children and a sari for herself. A sari is a beautiful piece of garment that is made by cotton or silk. Cotton and silk are luxurious material for clothing. Since Rukmani is able to afford such lavish clothing, British tanneries are improvements in the way Indians live. Indians went from rags to good material. By Arjun and Thambi working in tanneries that Britain created, Rukmani and her family have the ability to purchase nice clothing that they never had before.
    2) “It was a great spawning growth, this tannery. It grew and flourished and spread. Not a month went by but somebody’s land was swallowed up, another building appeared” (51).

The British influence harmed the people in India. Since tanneries were increasing and spreading all over India, Indians lose their dwellings and have to give up their spot for the tanneries. Tannery is a building where people work in it that’s owned by Britain. Before tanneries conquered India, Indians had wonderful time living with their families. There were many huts around India before British men came. Now since Britain tanneries spread all over India, Indians have to compete with Britain for territory with the tanneries that are spreading frequently. For example, Janaki, an Indian woman had to leave India since the British buildings took Janaki’s home (51). Indian’s houses were disappearing and India is having more British features. Indians are going to be wiped out if the tanneries keep taking up Indian’s homes. Therefore, Britain influence harmed the way people live in India.

  15. “There was a small trickle of blood running from his mouth, fresh and still bright red, and more blood from cut in his head, dark and congealed here and matting his hair.” (Markandaya 93)

The British influence had harmed the people in India. The “his” in this quote, refers to Raja, Rukmani’s son. Two men brought Raja’s dead body back home with a severe cut in his head and blood gushing out from his mouth. Raja was killed because he had stolen money from the people who owned the tannery (Markandaya 93). He was suffering from hunger and cannot bear the fact that he was starving. Raja needs to eat; therefore, the only way he could find food is to steal money from others. In less than three full days after Raja’s death, two officials from the tannery came to Rukmani’s house to tell the reason why her son was killed and they said that Raja had stolen calfskin (Markandaya 95). Raja needs the calfskin so he can sell it for money and then buy food to feed him. He wants his hunger to go away because he had suffered a lot from it. The British influence had affected people negatively in India because if they stole items from the tannery, the British would kill them without hesitation.

“Kenny is building a hospital,” he said. “When it is ready he will need an assistant, and he has offered me the job.” (Markandaya 113)

The British influence had helped the people in India. The “he” in this quote, refers to Selvam, Rukmani’s son. Kenny, a British doctor, offers a job to Selvam as being an assistant in the upcoming hospital. He needs an assistant to work by his side when the hospital is in progress. (Markandaya114). Kenny realizes that being the only doctor in the hospital was too much work for one person. Therefore, he would like an assistant to support him, Selvam. The return of Kenny brought hope and faith to Rukmani’s family since he was nice to them and others (Markandaya 108). Every time when Rukmani is in trouble, Kenny would bring hope to her. He is like the key guiding to success. The British influenced had affected people positively in India because Kenny is a supportive person to Rukmani’s family and others since he would reduce trouble for them.

  18. “Yes, but what could I buy with the money with prices so high everywhere? No sugar or dhal or ghee have we tasted since they came, and should have has none so long as they remained.” (Markandaya 32)

British influenced India in a negative way. For a small rural village, the arrival of the tannery meant big changes. The arrival of strange workers brought higher prices and drove out some local businessmen. Because many of the workers were young, single men, the social fabric of the village is disrupted. Rukmani had a very tough time buying groceries because the influence of foreigner brought high prices to the bazar, market. Rukmani complained that by arrival of workers and the influence of growing town the prices are high for everything and for that she and her family starved.

“Because they have the means,” Kenny said “and because they have learnt of your need. Do not the sick die in the streets because there is no hospital for them? Are not children born in the gutters? … you must cry out if you want help. It is no use whatsoever to suffer in silence.” (Markandaya 115)

British influenced India in a positive way. Rukmani’s village must have grown greatly in the 20 some years she has lived there, as it is now large enough to support a hospital. Kenny’s comment that the sick are dying in the streets and babies are born in the gutters shows that poverty is not unique to Rukmani’s family but also all around India. After India is colonized by British, India is introduced to new life style and to other countries. Kenny claimed that there are people accustomed to donating money to help the poor around the world. Rukmani shows that those who receive the aid do not always understand such generosity of people outside. Therefore by means that Kenny is getting money from donation to support hospital and poor shows that British colonization influenced India in a positive way.

  19. 1) “By the time they had entered their late teens they were earning good wages:a rupee for each day's work...” (Markandaya 67).

This quote demonstrates how the British influence helped the Indian people. Not only did they provide jobs for the people to work in, they paid them a fair amount. This will help Arjun and Thambi, Rukmani's eldest sons, to help keep the food on the table and clothing on their backs. Ever since Arjun and Thambi have been working at the tannery, Rukmani and her family have been living a good life. They were able to afford foods they couldn’t have before. They were able to buy clothing for everyone in the family. On top of all that, Rukmani was able to put some rupees aside to save it for further notices. Ever since the British provided the men with work, families were able to live better lives. This is how the British influence helped the Indian people.

    2) “I went to him and saw that his eyes were sightless; already a thin film was over-spreading them. I picked him up and held him to me; his limp, emaciated body, so light I might have been holding a handful of leaves, not a child, sagged lifeless against mine...Our last child...had been taken from us...” (Markandaya 105).

This quote is an example of how the British influence harmed the people of India. Times have gotten rough, and Rukmani and her family could no longer find it easy to feed themselves. The prices of food have increased, they had no money, and the harvest wasn’t doing too well. They are all suffering from starvation, but Kuti the most. He is only a child, and he is extremely unhealthy. Because of suffering of starvation, Kuti has lost his eyesight, and he eventually died. Rukmani knows that it was for the best because she struggled trying to find food to feed her family. The British have made things tough on the Indian families and made it difficult for them to try and support their families. The is how this quote is an example of how the British influence harmed the people of India.

    4. Okay, here is my new ANA for the second quote:

This quote is an example of how the British influence harmed the people of India. Times have gotten rough, and Rukmani and her family could no longer find it easy to feed themselves. Food is no longer easy to afford because the new shopkeepers (the ones that opened after the British took over) have raised their prices. Not only that, but the older shops had shut down because they were losing business-therefore ending another affordable place for people to get food. The prices of food have increased, Rukmani and her family had no money, and the harvest wasn’t doing too well. They are all suffering from starvation, but Kuti the most. He is only a child, and he is extremely unhealthy. Because of suffering of starvation, Kuti has lost his eyesight, and he eventually died. This is only one death out of many that the British have caused. Everyone struggled to find food. The British have made things tough on the Indian families and made it difficult for them to try and support their families by opening new shops and also because other shops have raised the prices of resources because of their presence This is how this quote is an example of how the British influence harmed the people of India.

I hope this one is less confusing :)

  20. 1) "Indeed no, said I, for it is even as i said, and our money buys less and less. As for living in a town if town this is why, there is nothing I would fly from sooner if I could go back to the sweet quiet of village life"(Markandaya 50).
British influenced India in a negative way. Kanthu's two eldest sons whom were the first in the village to start working at the tannery are unsatisfied with what they earn at the tannery. As one of the sons says " our money buys less and less" meaning that whatever amount of money they earn, doesn't help them with much. In addition one of the sons says that they would rather be at the quiet village and live a peaceful life. Therefore showing that the colonizing of the Indian village by the British was harmful to the people.
    2) " By the time they had entered their late teens they were earning good wages: a rupee for each day's work, and without fail they would hand me their earnings, keeping nothing back for gaming or whoring as many of the lads did"(Markandaya 67).
British influence was helpful to the people of India. When the British gave people jobs many families started to live a better life. Paying the workers a fair amount of money was also helpful because it would help families that need food, clothes, and shelter. In addition Rukmani saved some of the rupees for later use and other than that Rukmanis family started to live a better life than before. Thus showing how the British influence was helpful to many Indian families.

    1. Remember to cite the context in your analysis! You should also break down what is a tannery for your first analysis. For your second analysis, I see what you're trying to say, but I feel like there is a repetitive use of "better life". You should also include how were their lives before the British influence, since you included "live a better life than before".

  21. 1) "He was right, of course. The harvests had been very poor, shop prices were higher than ever" (Markandaya 51).

The British influence had harmed the people of India. When the British have conquered Indians and their village, they have drastically raised prices on food, clothes, and on more beneficial things. This was really injustice and a chaos to many of the villagers since they had to beg for food in order to support their families. Arjun, Rukmani's eldest son, said that "I am tired of hunger and I am tired of seeing my brothers hungry. There is never enough, especially since Ira came to live with us"(Markandaya 51).This was really hurtful for his mom to hear such words coming from her sons mouth. She understood that the "harvests have been poor" due to all the rain that occurred in their village and that the British have put expensive prices on all the food. Rukmani has a huge family which contains six kids to feed. Due to this tragedy, Arjun plans to work in a tannery along with his brother, Thambi, in order to help receive money for the family. This is how and why the British influence was harmful to the Indian village.

    2) "I will ask Kenny to help you. White men have power"(Markandaya 52).

Even though white men having power is a negative thing, this can also be a positive influence towards the Indian people. Kenny, short name for Kennington, was one of the British people who was really nice and helpful, unlike other white men. He is like a family to Rukmani since he had been there for her and helped her and her mom a lot. If anything, he would always try to help Rukmani's family by getting them food, milk, lending them money, and more. Kenny is a good friend who puts others before him and would do anything just to make the suffering people be content. This is how the British influence was helpful to the Indian village and the people.

  22. 1) " We asked for more money and they took from us our eating time" (Markanday 68).

Rukumani's two sons asked for more money from the British and they were punished in the process. This harmed the Indian people because it shows that the British people has a lot more power than the Indian people. So if the people that worked in the tavern asked for more money, they will get severely punished. People of India has no voice against the British. The people of India couldn't eat because of they wanted more money. it's gonna be tough for them to survive. Times were tough as people of India needed more money. This shows how colonialism harmed the Indian people.

    2) " Only one of my three sons had the same had the sense to go back. I do not know what is to become of us, for the land to sustain us all " (Markanday 70).

This quote shows how British influence harmed the people. The people who worked in the tannery has stopped working because of the British. They wanted their demands to be met but it didnt because they would be replaced. It's also the British people that makes all the decisions. This harms the people because the people of India can't have their say and if demands aren't reached, they won't be able to support their families. The British people have all the power and they make the decisions whether anyone likes it or not. Since the people who worked in the tannery aren't working because they want their demands, their demands aren't being reached, which harms the people. This is how British influence harms the people.

These two sentence meant the same thing and it's repeative. Maybe you can take the second sentence out. The ANA for the quote is kind of confusing towards the end. This sentence, "Since the people who worked in the tannery aren't working because they want their demands, their demands aren't being reached, which harms the people", the wording is confusing or the way you place them.

  23. "For the first time in years I brought clothes for the older children,a sari for myself, although he protested I brought for my husband a dhoti which he badly needed, since the other was in rags and barely covered his loins"(Makandaya 57).

This demonstrates how the British influence has had a positive impact on India. Before Rukmani's two eldest sons, Arjun and Thambi had gotten jobs at the tannery, it was hard for them to obtain clothes, because they were too expensive for them to afford. The tannery is a place that was built by the British to convert animal skin to leather. This created employment for not only Rukmani's eldest sons, but other people in India as well. Now that Rukmani's sons are getting payed, she was able to get her children clothes, herself a sari, which is a a garment consisting of a length of cotton or silk elaborately draped around the body, and a loincloth for her husband, Nathan. This shows how the British influence had a positive impact on India because of the fact that they provided employment for people in need of it. This helped Rukmani and her family get things that they needed, which in this case, were clothes.

'"Indeed no," said I, "for it is even as I said, and our money buys less and less..."' (Markandaya 46).

Here, Rukmani is expressing how ever since the British invaded her village, her money is getting her less items than it could have before the British invaded. This means that the British are gradually raising prices on things that the Indian people need, thus leaving many with little or no food nor clothes. This quote demonstrates how, before the British invasion, Rukmani was able to get more with her money than she is able to now. This shows how the British influence has had a negative impact on India.

  25. “I don't want to be indebted to Kunthi, or to her son. She was so different from us, sly and secretive” ( Markandaya 52).

The British influence harmed the Indian people. Once Britain colonized India, they began to industrialize. Industrialization was another way of saying a country transforms itself from a primarily agricultural society into one based on the manufacturing of goods and services. This led many Indians to lose their businesses and homes too. Rukmani and her husband, Nathan, was affected by this greatly due to the fact they lost half of their business and struggled even more financially. Their harvest began to grew poor which led to more problems. Rukmani's sons, Arjun and Thambi, wanted to work at the tannery to support his parents in this time of need. Rukmani worried as to why he wanted to work at a young age and grew dependent on to Kunthi's son (51). At this point, she is very insecure about who to depend on to get through this tough time. The family as a whole struggled to survive before, and Rukmani does not want to be in debt with her acquaintance, Kunthi, especially. This reveals a negative impact the British influence has left on the Indian village.

"For the first time in years I brought clothes for the older children,a sari for myself"(Makandaya 57).

The British influence affected the Indian people positively. Soon after Arjun and Thambi gained a job in the tannery, Rukmani and her family grew to be less poor. A tannery was a place where animal hides are tanned. The tannery was built by British officials due to the process called Industrialization. When British men built new buildings within the village, this created a huge opportunity for civilians to receive a job.Even though some lost their jobs because of the British's renovations, this benefited many. Which was the reason for Rukmani's sons to get a job to support their own family in this struggling time. This one event benefited the family greatly because the sons received a stable job to lead their family out of poverty. Rukmani was grateful for this outcome, and began to buy clothes for her children, husband and herself. Although, they could not have afford such clothing like a sari due to the fact they were all unemployed before. Their sons took the initiative to look for work to help their family because they had limited resources for food especially when Rukmani's daughter, Ira, has returned into the household. Thus, showing the British influence having a positive impact within the Indian village.

  27. Hey me again 8)
"I no longer sold to Biswas; there were several other shops in the town now where I was paid better..."(Markandaya 103)

Colonialism has helped Rukmani and her family. Every since the tannery was created, people from Britain have been moving in and out of their village, making it grow bigger and bigger, until it has become a town. With all these shops, they no longer have to go to Biswas, the moneylender. Not going to Biswas has been helpful, because he is sly, and makes money off the misfortunes of others, and other than that, Rukmani no longer needs to go to him for money because the other newer shops created by colonialism pays better, so because of colonialism, Rukmani has been able to support her family better, making colonialism helpful.

"The tannery owners are buying the land...our land; we have been here for thirty years"(130)

Colonialism has made the tannery, and because of colonialism, Rukmani and her family are about to lose their house they've owned for thirty years. The tannery has no sympathy for anyone, and just because they've done it to Rukmani's family doesn't mean they'll just stop there, they could take other people's homes too, just because they have more money. This makes Colonialism a harmful effect on the villages in India, because those countries colonizing Indian villages have more money and could take anything from them, no matter how hard the people of India have worked to earn those very same possessions.

  28. 1)”One would have thought from his words we had purposefully starved him, when in fact of what there was he always got the biggest share after my husband…’You do everything you can,’ he said. ‘It is not enough. I am tired of hunger and I am tired of seeing my brothers hungry. There is never enough, especially since Ira came to live with us.’” (Markandya 51)

This quote is an example of how British influence has impacted Rukmanis family in a negative way. Due to the British raising the prices of food and other items sold in the market Rukamni’s family lives in a state of slight starvation because they are not able to afford them. Through time Rukmani has done what she could to make money and provide food but it’s not enough when soon her daughter, Ira, has come back in their home as she is unable to bare children and her husband has lost all patience. Rukmani knows she did her best but it wasn't enough causing her son, Arjun, to take a stand and start providing for his loved ones. Overall, this shows how British influence has impacted Rukamni’s family in a negative way; it has forced Rukamni to depend on her children in order to survive.

2)“Yet they were good sons considerate of us, patient with others, always giving us a fair share of their earnings. With their money we began once again to live well” (Markandaya 52)

This quote is an example of how British influence has impacted the people of India and Rukmani’s family in a positive way. Due to the British building the tannery, it provided many jobs for those in need of work and money such as Kunthi’s and Rukmani’s sons. They were being paid more than a man’s wage (48) and Rukmani was able to save reasonable amounts of food, buy new clothing for her and her family and no longer starve. Rukmani and her family are slowly overcoming all prior hardships and are less worried about their life ahead. This is how the British influence has impacted Rukmani’s family and others in a positive way.

  29. “Once more Nathan was sole provider for us, and we forgot the good living we had known.” (Markanadaya 70)

The British influence has hurt the people of India. When the tannery was first built it was improving their lives. Then the people who worked in the tannery realized they weren’t getting paid enough. So the people of the tannery went on strike saying they weren’t going to work until their demand for higher wage was met. The voices of the people weren’t heard. The idea of money made the people of India blind, forgetting what really mattered. The people of the tannery were bitter and only had eyes for money.

“But from what they gave me I had also to buy clothes for them, for they were expected to put on shirts over their loincloths, and red turbans on their heads, so that although we had full bellies and were well clothed, there was not much left over, and I hope I secretly cherished of putting by some money for Ira soon withered; and when it finally died I recovered my peace of mind and was happy enough.” (Markanadaya 67-68)

The British influence helped the people of India. Before the tannery, which was built by the British, the people of India were struggling to make profits in working only in the fields. The tannery improved the lives of many, giving them jobs that were needed to survive. For Rukmani`s sons, they had earned a good amount of money that helped support their family. Her sons were determined to help out; by not see their siblings suffer from hunger, so they have kept their promises. After Rukmani`s son helped out they weren’t starving as much as they were before. With this happening Rukmani didn’t have to worry about money for a while making her happy and have peace of mind.

  30. 1) "It was a great sprawling growth, this tannery. It grew and flourished and spread. Not a month went by but somebody's land was swallowed up, another building appeared"(Markandaya 51).

This proves that the British influence hurt the Indian people. A tannery is a business where animal hides are tanned. The British people brought this business into the Indian villages. This business "spread" and "flourished" which means it was successful and benefited the British. The land is what a lot of people in the Indian village live off of. The tannery took up their land and destroyed the Indians business. This shows how the Indians cant make money in their own country but foreigners like the British can. The British have more power than the Indians do in their own country because their land and business can easily be taken away for the British to have their tannery. This shows how the British influence hurts the Indian people.

2)"Deepavali comes but once a year and this is the first time we have bought fireworks. Do not loose the opportunity"(Markandaya 59).

This proves that the British influence helped the Indian people. The people in the village were having a celebration that they only have once a year. Rukmani was never able to afford to buy fireworks until know. This is because her son Arjun and Thambi were working in the tannery and making enough money to help. Since Rukmani has been living in the village for a long time and only now she was able to buy fireworks for the first time, it means that times are changing for the better. Rukmani takes is as a great "opportunity" because this was something that has never happened before. Since the tannery was brought into the village Rukmani and her family had enough money. Therefore British influence helped the Indian people.

  32. 1."These things were you, now there is no connection whatever; the sorrow within me is not for this body which has suffered and in suffering has let slip the spirit, but for you, my son" (Markandaya 94).

The British influence harmed Rukmani and her family. Raja, one of Rukmani's son had went out one day, as usual, but had not returned. Two men brought his body back at dusk because Raja was caught stealing (Markandaya 93). The British caused Rukmani's family to be poor, leading to Raja's death. If colonialism did not happen, Rukmani and her family would still be able to afford their daily necessities. Raja would not feel the need to steal anything and he would still be alive. The British influences harmed Rukmani and her family because they played a part in Raja's death.

    2. "Should you not be thankful that he goes no further than two days journey, and that it is a good house that takes him? Kenny himself has assured you of that-you should be grateful that he has recommended our son" (Markandaya 73).

The British influence helped Rukmani and her family. Rukmani's two sons, Arjun and Thambi, have been doing nothing after the tannery rebellion for the workers to receive more money (Markandaya 70). Kenny, a British doctor, is helping Rukmani and her family by giving her two sons a job. Rather than doing nothing, they now have a chance to improve their lives. The British doctor's action benefited Rukmani and her family. They have a chance to improve their lives and create a better future.

  33. 1)"Now it is all noise and crowds everywhere, and rude young hooligans idling in the street and dirty bazaars and uncouth behavior, and no man thinks of another but schemes only for his money" (Markanadaya 50).

The British influence hurt the people of India. The tannery has made the village into a growing town. Before the tannery was built, the people of India has a quiet life selling their produce, making well profits and although the tannery may have helped families earn more money, the Indian culture is being forgotten. The streets is now filled with greedy men and outrageous behavior meanwhile back then, Indians were kind to one another and cared about each other. When Rukmani first married and moved to the village, she could depend on others because others were eager to help, but now, people only think of themselves. The British changed the thoughts of the Indians and the way they have to live their life.

2)"But from what they gave me I had also to buy clothes for them, for they were expected to put on shirts over their loincloths, and red turbans for their heads, so although we had full bellies and were well clothed,....hoped I secretly cherished of putting some money for Ira soon withered.." (Markanadaya 67-68).

The British influence has helped the people of India. This quote shows that the tannery has helped the villagers. It helped families earn more money and live a better life than they did when they sold their own produce. Rukmani's sons worked in the tannery because they felt as if what they had wasn't enough. The money that they earned bought them better clothes for the family and also helped their sister that was abandoned by her husband. The tannery gave families an opportunity to get back on their feet from their lost in the storm. Rukmani doesn't have to worry about her sons as much because she knows that they earn good money and they can take care of themselves. Rukmani has one less thing to worry about and can be happier now.

  34. "With their money we began once again to live well" (Markandaya 52)

This quote shows that British influence has helped Rukmani and her family. For a long time Rukmani's family was on the verge of starvation, having almost nothing to eat. Her two oldest sons, Arjun and Thambi, decide to work in the tannery in order to help their family get money for food. Had the British not built this tannery, many Indians like Rukmani's sons, would not have jobs. They would also not have the money to buy food and continue living during such a harsh time. Since her sons got the job at the tannery, Rukmani's family has been able to live a better life than many others were at the time. Therefore, the British influence helped Rukmani's family by providing them with enough money to feed her family and keep them alive.

"At dusk they brought his body home... He had been caught they said; something about money" (Markandaya 88)

This quote shows that the British influence harmed Rukmani and her family. One of her younger sons, Raja, was wandering about near the tannery, and he was killed. Two officials came to Rukmani's home to tell her that he was caught stealing from the tannery, and that the people who killed Raja didn't mean to, that they didn't use any force and that he was very weak. Rukmani knew all this. The reason that Raja was weak was because Rukmani and her family could not afford to buy food, and they were not having a good harvesting. They were not able to buy food because the prices in the stores went up because of the British. Also, at the time of Raja's death, one of the guards "tapped him with a lathi" (Markandaya 90), which is a club made of bamboo and iron. Even a "tap" with this sort or weapon would hurt. Therefore, the British influence harmed Rukmani's family because their unnecessary force caused her to lose an innocent child.

  35. 1. “No man thinks of another but schemes only for his money” (Markandaya 50).

This quote shows that the British influence hurt the people of India. The tannery created many jobs and people were being well paid. Because of this huge opportunity, Kanthu’s eldest sons decide to leave the village and move to a town to work as tanneries. But ever since the British came to India the prices of all items went up. Sure Kanthu’s sons were earning good money but based on this quote it shows that although they were being well paid it didn’t really help them to live a good life because one people were becoming selfish because they only cared about the money instead of helping each other, and two because the prices of everything was going up. Poverty is not good in any country because it affects the way people live because it creates competition and envy so in this case the British influence harmed the people of India.

    2. “You should not act like a timid calf at your age. As for your daughter, I will do what I can-but remember, no promises” (Markandaya 63).

This quote shows that the British influence helped the people of India. Rukmani was a woman who couldn’t have kids until Kenny moved to India he helped her to have a child. Now Rukmani’s daughter is dealing with this same problem because she cannot have kids and its causing her a lot of problems in her marriage because her husband wants to have kids already. Since Kenny helped Rukmani to have kids she is going to ask him to help her again by helping her daughter. Kenny is British and he is very helpful to Rukmani and to other people in India, who are “sick”. If the British wouldn’t had colonize India they wouldn’t had advance on their science and people would still be sick, and would be dealing with the same problems. For example Kenny is giving a chance for Rukmani’s daughter to get pregnant if he wouldn’t had move to India, she wouldn’t have any hope on having a child and her marriage would end. In conclusion the British influence helped the people of India to advance in their science which this fixed a lot of problems to the people who were sick, and this gave them a chance to have hope and to don’t give up.

  36. 1. “The next mourning the tannery had its full complement again, most of them workers who had gone back, the remainder men who were only too glad to obtain employment. For so long hope and the heat of battle sustained Arjun and Thambi. Now there was only bitterness. ‘The people will never learn,’ Arjun said savagely. They will rot before they do.’ People will never learn! Kenny had said it, and I had not understood, now here were my own sons saying the same thing, and still I did not understand.” (Markandaya 69)

This shows that British influence negatively impacted the Indian village. In this quote, “the people” refers to the Indian people of the village and is being criticized by Arjun, who is also Indian. With Arjun saying that “the people will never learn” is like a sign of betrayal since Kenny also said this as stated in the quote. Markandaya is saying that the British is influencing their Indian workers into going against their people and to join them since they are paying them higher wages as a sign of bribery. Rukmani doesn’t understand this since she isn’t part of their work force or part of the foreigners. She also does not understand why her sons and Kenny said this since they appear to be loyal to her. This shows a negative impact to the Indian people because it is like betrayal from their own people, just for more money to help support them since in India, people are very poor and with this happening the Indian people will be as confused as Rukmani of why.

    2. “The earth had yielded richly: there were, besides, beans and potatoes, melons and chillies, and I was well pleased with them and with the silver coins I had received in exchange. I no longer sold to Biswas; there were several other shops in town now where I was paid better, and where I did not have to endure the sly, spiteful observations he made.” (Markandaya 108)

British influence had a positive impact on the Indian people. ”The earth had yielded richly” in this quote is referring to the business becoming better for the shopkeepers and Rukmani. After the departure of the British, business began to become better for Rukmani and the shopkeepers since before it was hard since there was more competition. (Markandaya 51) Also, with Biswas not being there, it was easier for the Indian people to earn money since Biswas was not there to be a spy and see what the Indians were doing. The British influence had a positive impact on the Indian people as they are helping them improve their businesses. With the British realizing their mistake and left the village influenced the Indian village to be have better chemistry with one another like the shopkeepers having Rukmani work for them despite her friendship with Kenny.

  37. 1) “Kunthi’s two eldest sons were among the first in the village to start work at the tannery, and between them they brought home more than a man’s wages” (Markandaya 50).

The British influence had a positive impact on the Indian village. Workers that worked in the tannery made more money than they usually would. Since the tannery offered a higher salary many workers like Kunthi’s eldest sons were able to support their family better. The tannery offered many people a better job so unemployment began to decrease. As industries like this began to rise many villages were transformed into towns. British influence helped many of these civilizations to advance. This shows that the British influence had a positive effect on the Indian village.

    2) “Her voice held both anger and a bitter hopelessness: for a long time now her husband’s shop had been doing badly. He was unable to compete with the other bigger shopkeepers whom the easy money to be had from the tanners had drawn to the new town” (Markandaya 51).

The British influence had a negative impact on the Indian village. Kunthi’s husband Janaki was a shopkeeper. Much shop owners like Janaki went out of business due to competition. Small business weren’t able to compete against bigger business like industries because they not only paid workers more but also made products faster and at a cheaper price. It was unfair competition. Industries like tanneries put many people out of jobs forcing them to look for jobs and homes elsewhere. This shows that British influence has a negative effect on the Indian village.

  38. 1) “He was unable to compete with the other bigger shopkeepers whom the easy money to be had from the tanners had drawn to the new town” (Markandaya 51)

This quote shows that British influence has harmed the Indian people. The British had open stores and shops as well as offered more job employments. This increased competition between existing store owners. Those who were not fit to stay open were put out of business. Although, unintentionally, this leads to an idea similar to that of a monopoly--exclusive control of a commodity or service. In the case of Janaki's husband, he couldn't compete with the other shopkeepers and that made him poor and lose his job. That is why British influence has harmed the Indian people.

    2) “They were good sons, considerate of us, patient with others, always giving us a fair share of their earnings. With their money we began once again to live well” (Markandaya 52)

This quote shows that British influence has helped the Indian people. Jobless families were being mended with more job opportunities. Families such as that of Rukmani's were no longer starving. People began seeing new hopes for the future. If the British hadn't impose new jobs for people, families might still be struggling to earn money. Although colonization caused many families to become jobless, it gave many families the opportunity to find a job at the same time. That is why the British influence helped the Indian people.

  39. "They are calling for labourers, Arjun said... They are paying well, Arjun resumed, It would be good for us to work again" (Markandaya 71)

The quote shows that the British had a positive influence on the villages of India. People working for the British were calling for workers in the village. The work had higher pay than what the villagers were used to. There were many unemployed men in the village as well. The work offered by the British was giving work to unemployed men. Also, the men were getting high pay. This benefits the villagers, because there were more job opportunities for them, with better pay.

"Go from the land after all these years? Where would we go? How would we live?, It is your concern, I have my orders and I must obey them" (Markandaya 77)

This quote shows that the British had a negative effect on the Indian villages. Nathan was being asked to pay the rent for his land, when he could not pay. The rent given was supposed to be a part of the harvest of the crops. However, there were no crops because of long drought and powerful monsoons. If Nathan could not pay the rent, he and his family would be forced out of their home. Rent money was being valued more than peoples' homes and livelihoods. The British had a negative effect, because their policies of land ownership (paying rent) were driving people out of their homes and starving them.

  40. 1. “For the first time in years I bought clothes for the older children, a sari for myself, and although he protested I bought for my husband a dhoti which he badly needed, since the other was in rags and barely covered his loins.” (Markandaya 53)

In this section of the novel, Rukmani continues to live in poverty, barely getting by with the things in her home. She not only has to worry about feeding herself and her children, but now she must worry about feeding Ira, who has come back to live with them after being married for 5 years. Rukmani’s son Arjun becomes sick of living this way and persuades his mother to allow him to work. He begins to work and ultimately bring in many resources and extra money for the family. This is a positive impact on the Indian village and more specifically Rukmani and her family. Now that Arjun is able to work, he is able to bring the family up in wealth. They were able to buy new things and have enough food plus extra to feed the family, showing how positive the impact is.

    2. “’You gave me your daughter in marriage. I have brought her back to you. She is a barren woman… I have waited five years… She has not borne in her first blooming…” (Markandaya 50)

At this point in the novel Ira, Rukmani’s only daughter had finally gotten married at fourteen. She was with the man for five years until she had to return to her mother’s household to live because she could not bear any children for her husband. This is an obvious negative effect on the village and Rukmani’s family. Because Ira could not have children, she was given back to her mother, which puts more hard times in the household. Rukmani’s family was already poor and nearly unable to live on the resources they have. Now that Ira is back, they have an extra mouth to feed. This makes it harder for them to save resources and share it among everyone. Not only that, but because Ira could not bear any children, she is not seen as a good wife or fit for marriage, showing the negativity in the village.

  41. 1."The harvests had been very poor, shop prices were higher than ever." (Markandaya 56).
The British influence had harm the people in India. When the British took over India everything had changed and the prices have gone higher. Also the weather have changed in that village and when that changed the crops are hard to grow or to harvest. The people cannot grow food how are they going to buy stuff that they need when the prices have gone higher. The British harm the India people a lot.

2.“By the time they had entered their late teens they were earning good wages:a rupee for each day's work, and without fail they would hand me their earning, keeping nothing back for gaming or whoring as many of the lads did.” (Markandaya 67).
The British influence had helped the people in India. Enough prices are higher, people earnings are being paid fairly. The British are helping the families because they let their kids earn the money so that they could support their family. If the British did not help the India people they may still struggle because they would not know how would they buy food and supplies that they need for the family. The British helped the people in India.

  42. 1) "A few days after our conversation the shop finally closed... and the shopkeepers were glad that there was less competition, and the worker who moved into their hut was pleased to have a roof over his head"(Markandaya 51).

In this quote Kunthi's husband's shop closed down because of the competition with all the other big shops and a new worker moved in and was provided a place to work. Rukmani and her neigbors were did not care for Kunthi as much because she was not appreciative to her husband. Colonialism had a positive affect on India. Although colonialism caused people to close down their business, it also caused people to start there own business. After Kunthi and her husband closed down the shop a new worker came into the shop and was humble with what he had. Also Kunthi and her husband could start else where and start fresh.

    2) " How heartless are the young! One would have thought from his words we had purposely starved him, when in fact of what there was he always got the biggest share after my husband" (Makandaya 54).

In this quote Rukmani is complaining that her son is not grateful about the food that they had to eat. This shows that Colonialism had a negative affect on India. Since Nathan could not compete with the other big shops he could not bring home as much money as if there were no competition, therefore there was not a lot of food. If Kenny could describe the food as being very little that he starved, but in reality he got the second biggest share, this means that there was not enough food to feed everyone in the family. This also shows the great impact that Colonialism had on India.

  43. 1)“Kenny is building a hospital, when it is ready he will need an assistant, and he has offered me the job” (Markandaya 109).
Colonialism has helped the Indian village. Selvam, Rukmani’s son is explaining to his mother, Rukmani that he will no longer be working the land because he will start to work at the Hospital with Kenny, as his assistant (Markandaya 109). This new hospital being built would then benefit the people of the Indian village because it means that they would then have more people around to help them. Then that way the sick will not die in the streets and babies will no longer be born in gutters because there will soon be a hospital for them to be in (Markandaya 111). Especially since Kenny has hired Selvam and will train Selvam himself so that way there will be more helping hands to go around.
2)”Not in the town…For in the town there were the crowds,…and the filth that men had put upon it; and one walked with care for what might lie beneath one’s feet…” (Markandaya 113).
Colonialism has harmed the Indian Village. Now that more foreigners had come into the village, the village had become more crowded. This then caused the streets of the village to become filthy (Markandaya 113). Before the people of the village walked with no worries going to where they need to go to but since the streets began to be filled by the filth that the foreigners threw on it, the villagers started to walk with caution. The villagers were so preoccupied with being caution that they ignored the muted message that nature gave them and lived in fear because they felt threaten from before or behind (Markandaya 113).

  44. "I was especially pleased that I had not been forced to sell all the chillies, for these are useful to us..." (Markandaya 53).

The British influence had helped the Indian people. It shows that the British care about the people since they don't force the sellers to sell all their stuff. It allows the sellers to have a little for themselves which is not selfish from the British because they care about their sellers. That makes the people feel pleased about the British kindness and by that they can tell that the British are not mean people who force their people to do what they pleased. The British helped the people of India by being humane to them, since they are kind to the people, the people might produce better products for their sells. Therefore the British helped the people in India.

"For in the town there were the crowds, and streets battened down upon the earth, and the filth that men had put upon it; and one walked with care for what might lie beneath one's feet or threaten from before or behind; and in this preoccupations forgot to look at the sun or the stars, or even to observe they had changed their setting in the sky..." ( Markandaya 113).

British influence has hurt people from India. The quote illustrates how the town has changed and the people seem so concentrated on whether they made the right move or step right. In other words people at the town are being hurt by mistrust since they seem to be scare of whose behind them or before them. This shows how the British hurt the people from India because now that they all have jobs and an enough wage to support their families, are scare of getting rob by any person who might seem not at their level. Also the British made people to go straight to their jobs and not be able to admire the beautiful surroundings. In another hand it can be that Industrializations is happening since it says that the streets are filth because men had put upon it, also Industrialization harmed people because of its factories' pollution and mistreat. Industrialization began in England, the British might had wanted to spread their filthy machineries to India which is a close country and started to colonize it but it only hurt the people because now they are scare of a bad step and they don't have enough time to notice things happening around them. The British influence hurt the people from India.

  45. 1) "In the town a water reservoir had been built for the tannery workers and their families, but know others were allowed a limited quantity as well"(Markandaya 76).

British influence had a positive impact on the people of India. The water reservoir helped many people survive the harsh droughts that India faced. Water helped save crops and just relieve the thirst that the Indian people had to face. The British people helped not only those who worked for them, but any others who were in aid. The water reservoir helped the Indian village and saved many lives.

    2) " At dusk they brought his body home slung between two men, one at the head and one at the feet. There was a small trickle of blood running from his mouth, fresh and still bright red, and more blood from a cut in his head, dark and congealed here and matting his hair"(Markandaya 88).

British influence had a negative impact on the people of India. Rukmani's family was struggling to survive with very little food thanks to the high prices of food thanks to the British. Her family would scavenge for food around the town. Her son Raja went out one day but did not come back. He was brought back by two men dead. They said that he had been caught, and that it had something to do with money(Markandaya 88). He was stealing money because, he was trying to help his family survive. The British created a business where everything was much more expensive. This caused many families to struggle and do what they had to do to survive whether it was good or bad. The effect was that many people were injured, or even killed such as Raja.

British colonization had a negative impact on the lives of Indians. Janaki, one of the friends of the main character Rukmani, expresses anger and bitterness because her husband's shop is doing poorly. With a newly built tannery, Indian villages became towns with many shops and buildings constructed under the command of the British. These shops has taken in many costumers and has become very prosperous. Smaller stores such as that of Janaki's husband's are no competition compared to the other shopkeepers. Therefore, they do not consume a lot of money or business.

    (2) ' "Kenny himself has assured you of that- you should be grateful that he has recommended our son." "I am indeed," I said, flat and dispirited. "He has done much for us." ' (68)

The British influence had a positive influence on Rukmani's family. Two of Rukmani and Nathan's sons had left home to work in Ceylon and a third son has a job as a servant that is located in a house not as distant as Ceylon. He got the servant job thanks to the recommendation of Kenny, a man that helped Rukmani bear her sons. Kenny is a British man that has done a lot for Rukmani and her family. He gave them food and milk when they were very poor (32). Now, he helped the family receive more income by helping one of the sons obtain a job. Kenny is able to help Rukmani's family because he is in a more stable economic situation and since he is a British worker, he knows more people in the working industry of India.

  47. " I had never seen a white man so close before, and so I looked my fill" (Markandaya 23)

The British had influenced help to the people in India. In the quote, the "white man" refers to Kenny. Kenny is a doctor who helped Rukmani's mother (Markandaya 23). Kenny is a white man doctor which means he is mostly likely to be a British man. Even though the British has colonized India, the British still helps the people in India like Kenny does. The knowledge that Kenny has with medicine can help the people in the Indian village.

"We had to sell our goat," I said. "I can no longer afford to buy milk, but while my son is young and needs it I will give it to him" (Markandaya 37)

The British had influenced harm to the people in India. After India was colonized, resources were harder for the people of India to get. Rukmani struggled to bore a son but soon she has six children to provide food too (Markandaya 26). Rukmani was having a difficult time getting milk for her son therefore she sell her goat to rise money to buy milk. Even though she sold the goat, it wasn't enough. she had to breast feed her son. The British hurt the people of India making them less wealthy.

  48. 1)‘“You would grudge your own sister a mouthful,” I cried, “who eats half what I give her so that you boys can have more”’ (Markandaya 51)!
The quote above showed that colonialism had negative impact towards India. Rukmani’s household is an excellent example of the people being affected by colonialism. Under colonialism, the British raised the prices of market merchandises (Markandaya 27). This caused the average Indian families unable to get enough food for the whole family, causing everyone would not have enough food. The merchandises’ prices were too high, while people did not earn enough money to get these items. In Rukmani’s family, not enough money was earned by farming that no one could satisfy their hunger completely, creating the situation which some family members only getting “half” of the food.
    2) “In the granary, unused for so long, I stored away half a bag of rice, two measures of dhal and nearly a pound of chillies ”(Markandaya 52).
The quote above showed that colonialism had positive impact towards India. Before Rukmani’s sons work in the tannery, Rukmani’s family was unable to get enough food. Rukmani’s family was often starved because the family did not have enough money to get the high-priced market items. However, the British opened tanneries that allowed people to work in and get proper wages for buying necessary things. Now that Rukmani’s sons work in the tannery, the family has enough money to buy food and no longer starved. Colonialism had actually let people live a better life.

“Since then it had spread like weeds in an untended garden, strangling whatever life grew in its way. It had changed the lives of its inhabitants in myriad ways.” (Markandaya 135)
Rukmani started discussing with her husband, Nathan, the reasons on why their land has been sold. Rukmani blames the tannery, a building built in the village’s maidan by the British, for buying not only her land yet the land of others as well. Because the British colonized India it has affected them in a negative way. Many individuals land have been bought by the tannery and the families have been forced to leave. Rukmani’s family has now been told their land has been sold, the tannery have bought it. The tannery is described as “strangling whatever life grew in its way”. The “life” Rukmani is referring to is Rukmani village. It is being stripped away of its previous people, since now many in the society are being forced out of their land by the tannery. Additionally, other buildings including the tannery are being built instead of the original huts the Indian were used to. The British colonizing India has affected Indian villages in a negative way since the native people such as Rukmani’s family are being forced out of their land. Leaving many natives searching for a new home.

“Well, I suppose there were some families who saw in it hope for their sons: indeed, many still depended on such earnings, and if my sons had still been there my thoughts might been different” (Markandaya 136)
The tannery built by the British when they were colonizing India, provided jobs for the society in Rukmani’s village. Workers in the tannery received a better wage then what they were used to. By the British colonizing India it affected India in a positive way since it brought a new experience to the natives of India who work in the tannery. Workers were able to find jobs in the tannery that gave them better earnings. Through these earnings they were able to supply for their families who depended on the money. Just like how Rukmani had depended on her sons when they worked in the tannery (Markandaya 57). The British colonizing India affected India in a positive way since the job opportunity offered in the tannery allowed for Indian workers to have good earnings that supported their families.

  51. "' Kenny is building a hospital, " he said. " When it is ready he will need an assistant , and he has offered me the job"( Markandaya 113).
British colonialism affected India positively. During this time people are in great poverty and continue to get sick. Kenny, a foreigner and a good friend to the villagers, decided to use donated money and his own to open up a hospital for people in need. Rukmani's husband suffered from rheumatism, which is back stiffness, and fevers ( Markandaya 131). In addition, a villager named Kali suffered from periodic attacks of ague, a malirial fever with shaking chills and pain to the joints( Markandaya 122). British colonialism is affecting India positivley because they can be cured of their illnesses. Not only are the British trying to help the people of India, but they are also providing jobs for those in need of money. For example, Selvam was offered a job at being an assistant in the hospital. Since many are in poverty, it is hard for citizens to sustain themselves. When foreigners provide jobs it gives citizens hope to bring their families to health by earning money. British colonization brought positive effects to India.
"It was real; yet it seemed a nightmare, it could not be true that my son lay dead before me"( Markandaya 93).
British colonization created negative effects towards Rukmnai's family. Raja, Rukmani 's son who is now dead, used to work in the tannery. He was seen in the yard, where he was not supposed to be, and stole calfskin. Guards caught him and " merely laid hands on him"( Markandaya 93). Since Raja was weak from lack of meals, he fell after the guards got to him and died. They did not mean to kill Raja, but to stop him from his act of wrongdoing and to protect their property (Markandaya 94).The British affected Rukmani's family negatively because, by killing Raja, it caused pain, sorrow, numbness, and terror. The incident could have been avoided. Because of that, it was hard to grieve for a relative who died in suffering. British colonization affected Rukmani's family negatively by indirectly killing Raja.

  52. 1. “In the town a water reservoir had been built for the tannery workers and their families, but now others were allowed a limited quantity as well” (Markandaya 76).

British influence helped the Indian people. There was a drought in India and it has negatively affected the people. The lack of water dried up the rivers and caused plants to die. A chain reaction occurred from the two, in which the animals die from the absence and humans to have a dearth of food from the deaths. The drought went on and a water reservoir was built, most likely by the British since only tannery workers or their families can receive water. British influence helped the Indian people because during a drought, the Indians were provided with water.

    2. “He was seen in the yard, where he had no business to be, and when the chowkidars caught him they found he had stolen a calfskin” (Markandaya 90).

British influence harmed the Indian people. Rukmani’s son was caught by the chowkidars, or watchmen stealing calfskin. The village became more like a town and the people are more reliant on money than each other. Rukmani and her husband were trying to do their best to feed their children, but it was not enough in the kids’ perspective. Although the British are not to blame for the family being poor, the town with many shops tempted children to steal. The town caused people to believe that the solution to their struggles was to compete rather than work together. Rukmani’s son acted on his desire for money, rather than to work like his family had done. British influence harmed the Indian people because the village becoming a town resulted in “competition that made enemies of friends” and provoked people to steal (86).

  53. 1. " 'And did you not benefit from their stay, selling your pumpkins and plantains for better prices than you did before?" (Markandaya 28).
This quote is showing how the British influence benefited the Indian people. Since the white, red skin people, or the British came, many things changed. The village has been full of noise than ever without one moment of silence and prices have been higher in the market place. This may be bad for the people, or the villagers who are buying the product. However, it is good for the producer, or the people selling the product for that they sell it at the price where they believe they will achieve good money for. For example, they are sure that the British will pay the same price they give out to them, because they are rich and can afford anything. However, the British influence benefited society for that Nathan believes that their coming means that the villagers will soon be full of money because of their help.

    2. " 'It is very little for two rupees-' 'Take it or leave it. I can get double that sum from the tanners..." (Markandaya 43).
This quote is showing how the British influence harmed the Indian people. Since the monsoon, or a seasonal prevailing wind, came the people of India took advantage of the high prices that the British left. At this point, many people were left homeless by the fact that they had no place to stay and they had no food to feed their children or to feed themselves. Rukmani knew that the showing of these people in the first place wasn't going to bring any luck to the village when they started to build their new bulidings. However, the British influenced the villagers negatively based on the fact that people were facing high prices because these British people were rich. That's because when Rukmani went inside the veiled women's house, she saw that this women wore many rings that could feed her family for a whole year. This is the reason why this shows the British negatively influencing the Indian's for their own good.

  54. “Yet they were good sons, considerate of us patient with others, always giving us a fair share of their earnings. With their money we began to live well” (Markandaya 52).

Colonialism had a positive effect on India. Two of Rukmani’s sons have gone to work at the tannery which was built by the British that have colonized in India. Rukmani and her husband had been struggling to keep their family healthy. Colonialism had a positive effect because the tanneries provided good wages for the Indian people. With these wages Rukmani’s family began to “live well”. The tanneries built due to colonialism helped the Indian people live wealthier.

“The land is to be given to another if you cannot make your payment” (Markandaya 72).

Colonialism had a negative effect on India. There had been a drought in Rukmani’s village and all of Rukmani’s crops had dried up. Due to this Rukmani and her husband could not afford to pay the rent. Rukmani and her Husband tried to sell everything that they didn’t need but they couldn’t come up with even half of what they needed to pay the rent. This shows colonialism having a negative effect on India because many people like Rukmani can’t afford to pay their rent anymore.

Quote 1: "I had never been able to do so before- previous years we had contented ourselves with watching other people's fireworks, or with going down to the bonfire in the villages"(Markandaya 58)

This is an example of how the British influence helped Rukmani and her family's life. Rukmani's two eldest sons have decided to work at Tannery, a place own by "white men". Ever since they started to work there, they received a high salary and was able to put their family back on track. Not only were their lives stable again, they had enough money to spend on pleasures, something they could not do in the past. They were able to buy fireworks and celebrate the festival of Deepavali. Following this first time experience, the family went to the village and celebrated the festival. Their life had never been better. This shows how the British or in this case, the "white men" were able to help Rukmani and her family.

Quote 2:"Last year she[Janaki] had come with us, she and her children. This year who knew-or cared?"(Markandaya 59)

This quote shows how the British influence harmed Rukmani's friends. Janaki, one of Rukmani's closest friend was forced to move away from the village when her husband's business had failed. He couldn't compete with the other merchants that had many customers that were part of the tannery, a business ran by the “white men”. They made the other businesses richer and left Janaki's husband in the dust, forcing him to close shop and move to a village where he and his family could make a living. Many months later, everyone still in the village is celebrating the festival of Deepavali and doesn't even remember that Janaki and her family was ever there. Although they might not have intended it, the British had driven a family out of the village. This is how the British, or “White men” had harmed a family and driven them away.

  56. Version 2:

    Quotes:

-"I had never been able to do so before- previous years we had contented ourselves with watching other people's fireworks, or with going down to the bonfire in the villages"(Markandaya 58)

-"Last year she[Janaki] had come with us, she and her children. This year who knew-or cared?"(Markandaya 59)

The British influenced some positive things to the Indian culture, but it also caused harms. Rukmani, the protagonist of the story Nectar In A Sieve, goes through many troubles in her life. There was a terrible storm that caused damage all over the village which Rukmani resided. Almost everything was destroyed are damaged, except for the tannery, a factory owned by the “White men”. Rukmani, as well as everyone else in the village had a hard time surviving after the storm. Rukmani's son decided to go and work in the tannery and was able to make a lot of money from working there. When the time came for the festival of Deepavali, they were able to buy fireworks,"I had never been able to do so before- previous years we had contented ourselves with watching other people's fireworks, or with going down to the bonfire in the villages"(Markandaya 58). Rukmani and her family were never so fortunate to be able to spend money on firework or other pleasures. It was after her sons decided to work at the tannery, work for the “white men” and make a lot of extra money. Although Rukmani was lucky, not everyone was as fortunate. Rukmani's friend, Janaki had also faced the same disaster of the storm. She relied on her husband's shop. However, her husband was unable to compete with the other flourishing shops that had many customers from the tannery. He was forced to close up shop and take his family and leave the village. A few months later, Rukmani recalled Janaki's departure, "Last year she[Janaki] had come with us, she and her children. This year who knew-or cared?"(Markandaya 59). It was only last year that Rukmani and Janaki went to the festival together happy as can be. However the following year, Janaki was no longer in the village. The “White men” not only drove Janaki and her family out of the village, they also made everyone else in the village happy and forget their existence. The British made one family's life better, while they drove another family away and made everyone forget them. The British influenced the Indian society negatively.

  57. “The more reason for me to earn,” rejoined Arjun. “I do not grudge food to her or to you. I am only concerned that there is so little,” (Markandaya 55-56).

Ira, Rukmani’s daughter had been brought back to her village by Ira’s husband due to the problem of Ira not being able to borne any children, sons, for her husband who has waited only five years (54). Ira was brought back to her mother, Rukmani’s, hut during a horrible time after Rukmani and her family had suffered through days of heavy rain and wind which had ruined their plantations and limited their availability to obtain any type of food in shops. The British influenced Arjun, one of Rukmani‘s son, knowing that his mom had to feed every one in their family, with confidence and independence to announce that he’ll begin working at the tannery which helped his family. The British influence has helped Arjun by having British men build places like the tannery that provided many people with job opportunities. Arjun was influenced by the thought of earning one rupee per day just for working for the British in the tannery to help out his family. The British has helped Arjun and Thambi, another son of Rukmani’s who had also joined with Arjun to work in the tannery, because with their earnings from their work it has brought back the life their family wanted. Their family began to live well and had enough money to feed everyone in the household, they even had extras which Rukmani for the first time had used on clothes for her children (57). The introduction to better payments by working in the tannery for the British has gave Rukmani’s family the experience of a better life after a horrible, tragic storm.

“The land is to be given to another if you cannot make payment,”(Markandaya 77).

After Rukmani’s sons, both Arjun, Thambi and along with some fellow workers in the tannery requested for a raise in their salary, the workers decided to not go back to work because their request was denied. The British men needed more workers, soon they announced out to people in the town that there would be jobs given to people who come with the British men to the island of Ceylon, where the workers would be offered a higher pay (71). After Rukmani’s two sons left to Ceylon, a drought that lasted for a long period of time was slapped into Rukmani’s life along with everyone else living in the town. The British influence has harmed Rukmani and her family because the land that Rukmani’s husband had rented for producing their crops was at risk. Since the drought had caused crops on Rukmani’s land to wither there was no crop that could’ve been sold for any money and this meant that the rent of the land that Sivaji, a rent collector, had came to collect could not be given. The British influence has harmed Rukmani’s family because even after they have explained how nature’s behavior had impacted them and they couldn’t do anything about it, Sivaji, sticking to his duty and obeying the British people insisted that if they do not pay the land will be taken away. This has caused Rukmani’s family to sell almost everything they had, resulting in a more tragic state of poverty.

    1. Despite some misspellings and run-on's, your analysis is satisfactory. Your quotes are good too :]

  60. “’They are paying well,’ Arjun resumed. ‘It would be good for us to work again. It is not fitting that men should corrupt themselves in hunger and idleness… ‘labour is required of you not here, but in the island of Ceylon.’” (Markandaya 71)
British influence had a positive effect on the Indian people. When the workers of the tannery went on strike, due to their demands of increased income not being met, they were left without work and no way of obtaining money. The tannery owners easily replaced the workers that demanded more money. These workers included two of Rukmani’s sons, both Arjun and Thambi, and were left without a source of income. The British offered an opportunity for Indians to work in Ceylon, which is a British crown colony. This has a positive effect on the Indian people because it provides as an opportunity to obtain work and profit in order to support oneself. Also, the company recruiting the workers will pay for their voyage to get to Ceylon. The British are providing the Indians which overall has a positive impact. Without the influence of the British, many people would have been left without work, which would have generally impacted daily life of families. More specifically, families would then have to provide for the family members without work. Their daily routine would be compromised. As stated in the quote, as a result of living without jobs, men have faced “hunger” and “idleness”, which generally harms society. However, these characteristics of unemployed men are terminated as the British offer for workers to work on their plantation. Overall, the British have a positive influence on the Indians because they offer job opportunities that provide certain benefits for the Indian people.

“… for it is even as I said, and our money buys less and less. As for living in a town… now it is all noise and crowds everywhere.” (Markandaya 50)
British influence has a negative impact on the Indian people. Due to the construction of the tannery, Indians did obtain a decent income due to British interference. Indians who have a job working at the tannery make a larger profit as compared to any other worker. However, as a result of the British influence, prices of crops increased. Due to the increased prices, the people without jobs struggle to obtain even more that before. Since the unemployed have no source of income, the increased prices will have a harmful influence. Because the people working in the tannery have more profit compared to other villagers, they are the only ones who the increased prices will not affect. For every other family in this part of India, the increased prices in the market will result in certain crops not being purchased because they are too expensive to buy. Overall, the British have a negative impact due to the increased prices of crops.

  61. 1)"Take it or leave it. I can get double that sum from the tanners, but because I know you-" (Markandaya 43)

The influence of the british harm the indians and Rukmani and her family. Since the horrible monsoon has destroyed so many homes and crops, only certain people have food to sell. Like Biswas, who is selling rice. Although he is selling, he highers his price and the only people who could pay so much are the british. So the british having so much money take the only food available to the indians.

2)"Kunthi's two eldest sons were among the first in the village to start work at the tannery, and between them they brought home more than a man's wage." (Markandaya 46)

The british's influence helps the Indian people. They give the people a chance to work and make a good amount of money for food. Kunthi's two sons work in the tannery of the british and make more than enough money for food

    1. You should expand on your second quote to make your analysis look more convincing and stronger. You also need to put punctuation's/periods at the end of each quote and sentences. In your first quote, " Like Biswas, who is selling rice" that is a fragment. you should have combined it with the sentence before it in order to make it sound better.

  62. Before Rukmani and Nathan go to the city, the British’s influence hurt the people of India. After Rukmani and many other farmers decided to sell their goods to the British moneylenders, more British entered their village. Everyone could tell that the “Townspeople” (Markandaya 26) entering were British since they had paler skin and a heavy intonation when speaking the village’s native language. The British townspeople came to build a tannery; a place where animal skins are tanned and processed. When the tannery was completed, the British departed. This pleased most villagers including Rukmani who thought, “They had invaded our village with clatter and din, had taken from us the maidan where our children played, and had made the bazaar prices too high for us. I was not sorry to see them go” (Markandaya 27). Since the British were loud and took a large portion of the fields where the children played, people in the village were annoyed when the British moved in. However, the most harmful influence the British had on the Indian people was the increased price of goods at the marketplaces. This was most harmful for the people of the village because the price for simple staples like rice was too high for the poor villagers to afford. The high prices led people to worry and starvation.
Even though the British’s influence hurt the people of India, their influence also benefited India in certain circumstances. After the tannery was built, people from the village were allowed to work in it. The workers received a decent pay and had suitable working conditions. When Rukmani’s family was in despair about Ira’s return and the food shortage, Rukmani’s eldest son Arjun decided he would work in the tannery to earn extra money for the family. As his parents attempted to dissuade him, Arjun stated, "You do everything you can. It is not enough I am tired of hunger and I am tired of seeing my brothers hungry. There is never enough, especially since Ira came to live with us” (Markandaya 51). Since the tannery was built, the British provided decent jobs for the villagers to afford necessities. If the tannery was not there and didn’t provide jobs, most of the villagers like Rukmani, wouldn’t be as well off; most villagers would continue to starve and be unable to afford shelter repair. Therefore, despite the British having a harmful influence on the Indian people, the British also had a helpful impact on India.

  63. “With their money we began once again to live well. In the granary, unused for so long, I stored away half a bag of rice, two measures of dhal and nearly a pound of chillies” (Markandaya 57).

The British influence had helped the people of India. After Ira became married, there was a long period with heavy rain which had damaged farmers’ lands, it affected plantations and caused problems for grains (Markandaya 44). Then Rukmani’s oldest son, Arjun decided to go out and work because he felt that they never had enough food and they had experienced hunger for too long. Another reason was his sister came home too, which made him even more want to earn money. (Markandaya 55). Later, Thambi who is Rukmani’s second son also followed his brother’s footstep and decided to work as well (Markandaya 56). But thanks to the British, Rukmani’s sons were able to get a job and earn good wages that helped the family to store extra resources. Therefore, the British influence had affected the people positively in India because people were able to improve their life with their hard work to make money.

“Pay half now,” Sivaji said, “and I will try and do as you wish.” He spoke quickly, as if to give himself no time to repent of his offer, and hurried away even before my husband has assented” (Markandaya 77).

The British influence had harmed the people of India. Sivaji was ordered to collect his master’s dues from Nathan. But unfortunately there is nothing this year , so Nathan wasn’t able to pay off the rent dues (Markandaya 77). Even though Nathan had no money but he had the land, so Sivaji threatened him that if he doesn’t pay, then he would have to give up his land (Markandaya 77). Sivaji’s words were aiming to rush Nathan to pay and being mean at the same time because it was actually the rain’s fault that destroyed the land (Markandaya 44). But Sivaji didn’t look at his side of perspective and threatened him to pay for the rent dues. Nathan had already struggled with hunger for a long period of time, there was no way he could be able to pay the dues. As a result, the British influence affected the people negatively in India because people use threatening to get what they wanted when they clearly know others were suffering by it.

  65. "The harvests had been very poor, shop prices were higher than ever(Markandaya 56)."

This quote shows that British influence has benefited the Indian people.Rukmani and her family were experiencing harsh times especially when a storm came and destroyed their rice crops. Arjun,Rukmani's eldest son felt that there was to little necessities to survive.Since the British influence brought the tannery,a place for making leather,it convinced Arjun to get a job at the tannery.Arjun was also influenced when Rukmani's daughter came back giving him more reason to support himself and the family. This shows a positive impact from the British influence on the Indian people.

"He was unable to compete with the other bigger shopkeepers whom the easy money to be had from the tanners had drawn to the new town.A few days after our conversation the shop finally closed down (Markandaya 51)."

This quote shows British influence has harmed the people of India.Kunthi,a villager and a friend of Rukmani, and her husband had a shop that was doing poorly because they were unable to compete with others. They relied on the money they got from the tannery because their sons found work there.Once their best source of income was gone, their shop closed and they had to leave.British influence created the tannery and made people rely on them including Kunthi's family. If they go then the ones who relied on them will fall. This is why British influence had a negative impact on the Indian villagers.

  66. 1)" A few days later he began working at the tannery, and before long Thambi, my second son, had joined him" (Markandaya 56).

The British influence had a positive impact to Rukmani and her family in this quote. When the British took over it was hard to find jobs and make money. Rukmani's family went through times where they didn't have enough food to eat. After the Tannery was built, Rukmani's 2 sons can help make money for the family and get food.

2)" The men worked hard, some of them until late at night" (Markandaya 51).

The British had a negative impact to the Indians in this quote because people had to work really late. When they work late they don't even get much money to get food for themselves and their family.

  67. "Two sons have gone, now the third is going-and not to the land, which is his blood, but to be a servant, which he has never been. What does he know of such work?"(Markandaya 72).

The British colonizing with India lead to them harming the Indians. The British had built a tannery. A tannery is where an animal hinds are tanned. The tannery was a monopoly in the village. This shows a negative influence on the Indians because the reason was that Rukumani's family were hungry since their was a lot of competition they did not get enough money to pay for thier food. The tannery harmed the village because before the village was peaceful and now the children had to hold thier noses when they passed by,it brought shouting, disturbance and crowds. The British just harmed the village.

"I was especially pleased that I had not been forced to sell all the chillies, for these are useful to us; when the tongue rebels against plain boiled rice, desiring ghee and salt and spices which one cannot afford ,the sharp bite of a chillie renders even plain rice palatable" (Markandaya 57).
The British colonizing with India helped the Indians. Rukmani's family was in need of money. They did not have enough to feed their family. Arjun and thambi started to work in the tannery, This allowed good wages to them. They gave their parents fair shair of the earnings. This shows that the British helped because of the good payment it allowed for Rukmani and her husband to improve thier farm. They were able to have extra stored so they can continue with thier farming. As well it allowed for them to buy new clothes and a new rag for her husband. This shows the positive impact it had on the Indian village.

This shows that the people have been sent food from the storm that passed it helped them in helping the people that had been starving from lack of food.

2)"Hungry since there was little to eat...he food had gone to..the new seasons harvest" (44).

This shows that the people had been starving from the lack of food n resources they had.

  69. "To the children i handede out two annas apiece, to be spent on fireworks" ( Markandaya 58)

The British influence has had a positive impact on the Indian people. The British has helped the Indian people get jobs working the the tannery. When Rukmani's son, Arjun, works in the tannery he starts to earn money to help support his family. After a few day of work his brother Thambi starts to work with him to help support his family too(56). With the boys earning they decide tto give his parents "fair share of their earnings" (57). Using that money Rukmani was able to buy her kids garments for the first time in years. The British helped by creating labor for men to work in the tannery, which allowed these men to have money. During the Deepavali festivail Rukmani was able to give her kids money to buy fireworks which was the first time. Rukmani usually "watched other familys have fireworks" (58), this shows how the British impacted the Indian people positively, giving them money to create new experiences.

"He looked grim and tired, for his eyes were burning, there was an air of such impersonal cruelty about him that despite myself i shivered" (Markandaya 62).

The British influence has a negative impact on the Indian people. During this time more and more people have been working in the tannery because it created labor and earnings. Rukmani is describing "he" which is really Kenny as if he is mean, which he is not because he helps people. Kenny helped Rukmai have her children and helped give Rukmani food for her children. Rukmani awaits kenny outside of the tannery because her daughter needs help having children, like she did. Rukmani sees Kenny differently, Kenny is tired from working in the tannery and he has changed. When Kenny sees Rukmani outside he says " I said no more tonight. Did you not hear me? Do you think I am made out of iron?" (63). Kenny changes the attitude in the way he talks to Rukmani, the tannery has changed him into a cruel person. Kenny has always helped Rukmani with all his kindness, now after hardwork he has changed and not wanting to help her because he fears she wants another child, when infact she is here for her daughter. The British has a negative influence on the Indian people by changing how they greet people.

  70. "They are calling labourers," Arjun said, not looking up. "It would be a good opportunity for us" (Markandaya 71).

Arjun and Thambi have found out that the British are building a work place. These work places are for tea plantations making them need more workers. British influence was positive here because they are creating more and more jobs for people who are suffering and don't have job and need employment. This gives Rukmani's sons, Arjun and Thambi and many Indians a chance to get themselves out of the poor and get them out of harsh living conditions their currently in.

"Now it is all noise and crowds everywhere and rude young hooligans idling in the street and dirty bazaars and uncouth behavior, and no man thinks of another but schemes only for his money" (Markandaya 46).

After the British invasion, Rukmani states to the reader how things are different than they used to be. Even though Rukmani's village is now a town , everyone is acting as if they'd do anything to get what they only want. Here, British influence is harmful because it turned society into a place where it was troublesome to walk in, rather than how peaceful it was before, and now according to Rukmani, every man was for himself.

  71. “Kunthi’s two eldest sons were among the first in the village to start work at the tannery, and between them they brought home more than a man’s wages” (Markandaya 50).

This quote shows that the British influence has help the Indian people. The British gave the people new jobs, like the” work at the tannery.” Kunthi’s two eldest sons “brought home more than a man’s wage” which means that they were making a lot of money. The British gave people opportunities to make more money and get a job which shows that the British influence was helpful to the Indian people.

"...there is nothing I would fly from sooner if I could go back to the sweet quiet of village life. Now it is all noise and crowds everywhere, and rude young hooligans idling in the street and dirty bazaars and uncouth behaviour, and no man thinks of another but schemes only for his money"(Markandaya 50).

Before the British had come, Rukmani describes the village life as “sweet quiet.” When the British did come their influence hurt the Indian people. The village is quiet no more it is “noise and crowds everywhere” which means that the British people had started to live in India and change things up. The children are violent and rude now, the market (bazaars), are dirty, people lack good manners, and man only worries about his money. The British have turned the peaceful village life into a noise and horrible village. This all shows that the British influence has hurt the Indian people.
